Historia
When bigotry and power mania take control, disaster always follows for subjugated persons - even when the power is wielded by the Church. Witchcraft was viewed as devil-worship. Between 1450 and 1750, 100,000 people were accused, subject to the most bestial tortures and usually executed. Witches examines the wildfire-spread of witch-hunting across Europe and America, revealing the disturbing and brutal realities of these witch hunts and their roots in misogyny and religious persecution.

Disturbing history
Revisado: 07-17-24
This was an interesting but difficult book to listen to. I applaud the narrator for her work as it would be very difficult to recount such horrors without it having an impact on her personally. It is good to have this history and I appreciate the author's work to thoroughly document the evil and violence of this era. my hope is, if you can listen to this entire book, that you will never forget what happened, the underlying circumstances that led to this persecution, and take heed of any vestiges that rise up in our time. It cannot be lost on the reader of the unbelievable and disproportionate impact on women during this persecution. I was shocked when it said about the persecution in Germany that a leader stopped it because there wouldn't be any women left in the region.
So sad that this ever happened but let us learn from it and never let it happen again.

Exciting and unpredictable plot.
Revisado: 07-11-24
I watched the movie The Nineth Gate before reading the book. I was pleasantly surprised that they were quit different and the plot of the book had many subtle twists and turns that the movie did not. it was wonderful to be in the mind of the main character rather than just watching it. This story inspires me to continue my voracious book collecting. You never know what you might find in an old book!

Jonty Rhodes guides us in an engaging study of covenant theology and why it matters. With clarity and wit, he shows us how covenants carry the Bible's story from start to finish and ultimately give root to the gospel of salvation by grace. Beginning with Adam in the garden of Eden, and ending with Jesus, our risen Covenant King, Rhodes illuminates the good news of a promise-making, promise-keeping God.

Rich Reformed Doctrine Made Easy
Revisado: 02-08-24
Covenant theology is a concept often mentioned in reformed circles in hushed tones and criptic references. If you really want to be a reformed "insider" or a super-spiritual Calvinist, if there is such a thing, then you stand in the church halls and wisper about "the covenant". Well, this has been my experience. I've heard people talk about the extra blessings that "covenant keepers" recieve and the curses that hang over the heads of "covenant breakers" and really had no idea what this was about. However, the emphasis on covenant is prolific throughout the Bible, and in several places, the Bible is called the Book of the Covenant.
Jonty Rhodes does an exceptional job in this book explaining the framework of covenant theology and its relevance to our Christian life. He has done the hard work of streamlining the concepts from other massive works on this topic and tying everything into the scriptures. He also handles this topic with a love and concern for those who have struggled to understand this subject. Like a true overseer of souls, he presents a positive case for covenant understanding with an encouraging spirit.
This book has inspired me to live a life that more fully rests on the promises of God and one that honors our great Covenant Head, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jonty Rhodes' teaching reminds me so much of the beloved J.C. Ryle, and I am sure this book will soon be classic for the Chriatian community until our Lord returns.

Clear, concise, and penetrating, Practical Religion contains a series of writings about the daily duties, dangers, experiences, and privileges of all who profess and call themselves true Christians. Ryle explains that a "practical religion" is not a religion of works, but rather one in which those who are saved can put their faith into practice.

A Book for the Faithful
Revisado: 07-27-18
After listening to this book I have but one question. With the Bible in one hand and this text in the other, what Christian could ever say that they knew not how to live the Christian life? I could only handle reading one chapter a day for I would spend the rest of the day weeping, wailing, repenting, and praying the God through Jesus would renew my mind, my walk, and my actions. I pray many would read this book and be saved from lukewarm Christianity.

Aycliffe does it again!
Revisado: 09-25-16
This was an excellent read. the narration was great and I found myself shivering as the story progressed. I hope audible will obtain all of Aycliffe's books, especially The Talisman. I like Aycliffe's book by that title more than King's.

Another Great Read from Audible
Revisado: 06-04-16
Matt Graham is an amazing guy and his story is inspiring. I think he would appreciate that I listened to it on Audible like listening to a story told around the communal fire in primitive times. OK gotta go and listen to it again! Peace.
