Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Another Gem from Kate Quinn
Revisado: 01-17-25
I have to admit that it took me about a chapter to get into this book; they usually hook me right away, but this one wasn't as specifically about WWII and I was a little unsure at first.
Ms. Quinn did not disappoint. This book is so richly layered and the story is beautifully told. The historic details in all of her books is topnotch, and this is no exception.
Fabulous story and engaging characters. The audio is superb and the subtle language accents were wonderfully nuanced.

Story was fun and light but formulaic. Character growth almost non-existent. At times I found myself rooting for someone to do something out of character, but alas, a light Christmas tale a la Hallmark Christmas movies

What a Powerful Story
Revisado: 01-30-23
I read this expecting it to be quite different than it was. I had no idea that Corrie ten Boom was as active as she was in the Resistance and found that fascinating. anticipated the brutality of the prisons and concentration camps. I didn't anticipate the strong thread of love and forgiveness that ran through the entire, compelling story.

Spending her thirtieth birthday alone is not what dating columnist Cleo Wilder wanted, but she plans a solo retreat―at the insistence of her boss―in the name of re-energizing herself and adding a new perspective to her column. The remote Irish island she’s booked is a far cry from London, but at least it’s a chance to hunker down in a luxury cabin and indulge in some self-care while she figures out the next steps in her love life and her career.

Pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 03-12-22
I so enjoyed Ms. Silvers' last two books, and had a bit of apprehension when this one started a bit rocky. I decided to give it a couple hours of my time, and by that point, I was hooked.
I am closer in ago to the character Dolores, yet found many of the main character's observations and learnings to be ageless. The author has a way with words, and I found myself nodding with recognition of feelings numerous times throughout the story. Many of us have that brief romance that we file away in the back of our brains when we marry; and this book brought forth the sweetness of those long ago memories.

Good, but I hoped for great
Revisado: 02-04-22
The Vanderbilt's are brought to life and held up as poster children for excess. Cooper did a good job of describing the rise and the excess, but not the fall of the Vanderbilt dynasty. Certainly excess was behind it, but there had to be bad business decisions, terrible legal and tax advice, and obstinance to change that were, sadly, not part of the story. Or is he going to publish a second volume that detauls the downfall?

Historia
Dismissed by a bored author at a book signing, a betrayed young man named David Sedaris made a vow. Someday, when it was his turn at the table, he’d connect with his readers. The experience has been even more revealing than he’d hoped. In this hilarious and perceptive essay, the celebrated humorist reflects on the unusual patterns of forced socialization between author and audience, and the obligations and sometimes surprising returns of not-so-chance encounters with strangers: jokes, secrets, insights, and even charity.

Once again, David Sedaris brings together a collection of essays so uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him all over again. He tests the limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when, finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill the coffee machine.

One of his Best!
Revisado: 09-11-20
This book was balm for a ragged soul. I listened to it during a drive to/from So Cal during raging wildfires (the title was so apt), in the dog days of Covid-19.
I'm setting that scene as the backdrop, because some stories made me laugh so hard I literally had to pull the car off the road.
I've never been a smoker, but David's retelling of his efforts to quit smoking will ring true to anyone who has struggled with any sort of addiction: smoking, alcohol, food, drugs, etc.

A Riveting Story
Revisado: 02-11-20
This book was mentioned as part of a sermon I listened to about a week ago. It sounded interesting, so I downloaded it, and within a half a chapter I was hooked. I even drove home "the long way" a couple times so that I could listen to more of it.
I'm not a major conisseur of the arts, but the story was so captivating. Have been raving about it to everyone. And, I learned a lot about the subject of art history!

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Bryson at his best
Revisado: 02-24-19
Bill Bryson is one of the best storytellers out there, and this book is exceptional. The summer of 1927 comes to life with his amazing attention to detail and ability to pull sometimes obscure facts from the past and breathe into them new life, as part of the greater narrative of the story.
I will undoubtedly listen to this book again.
