Historia
Van and his crew have killed an empire. The problem is the empire doesn’t know it’s dead. Moving among the stars, the Peacemakers are faced with their greatest challenge—removing an evil so vast, it has a presence in every known star system. To that end, they’ll need to move quickly. To do so, they must be mobile, and that means big changes in their tactics. . . and their crew. With the help of a shadowy figure known as the Body Thief, Van will continue his policy of justice and freedom for all citizens, even if they began life on a computer chip.

Boring
Revisado: 11-16-23
Each book is getting more and more tedious. I really like the first couple. I can barely bring myself to listen to the end of this book.

There is no story
Revisado: 05-31-23
So I am not done the book. I am probably a 1/3 of the way through. So far there seem to be no story line. They are searching for someone...because. There is a vampire...because. They have more ammo...because.
I am not invested in the person that they are trying to recover. I am not invested in the reason they need to recover her.
The more I type, the more I realize I do not enjoy this book. I will stop typing before I turn the review to a 1.

It was good
Revisado: 05-31-23
I have heard this spoken about as the best modern v. fantasy book. Its not. I think the Forgotten Ruin series is better, despite some of its draw backs. That being said this book was ok.
I was not a fan of the "officers are all stupid" storyline.
Overall, the book was just ok.

Pleasantly Surprised
Revisado: 05-15-23
I got this book on a whim. I had no idea what it really was, beyond the description. I was happy to discovery a book that was fun, easy to listen to and kept my attention.
Sure, there are plot holes. However, I wasn't expecting world building on a JRRT level.
I recommend it. You will end it with a smile and hopes of finding another hidden treasure on audible.

I am pretty surprised that people are still enjoying the series. I feel as though it has really gotten repetitive.

Still fun
Revisado: 05-15-23
Plot holes remain. Let's just be real brutally honest. The plot holes, which were already massive, grew significantly. HOWEVER, one thing remains the same, the book is FUN. It still inspires the imagination. It still puts you right there, making you think about what you would do. This is not a literary masterpiece. It is just an enjoyably and easy read (or listen).

Revisado: 05-15-23
I know modern fighters v. fantasy characters has been done before. I know that it may even have been done better before. However, that doesn't mean this book isn't fun. Yep, there are plot holes. Yep, there is not much continuity between magic that was used in one chapter as opposed to another. However, the book ignites the imagination. It makes you lie in bed at night and put yourself there. It is a fun book.

Historia
Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War. Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes’ predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

Terrible Characters is only the beginning.
Revisado: 05-15-23
I am in Chapter 23 of 259 and I am so close to giving up. The number of eyerolls I have experienced in 23 chapters is more than the total chapters in the entirety of the book. I am REALLY trying to let this book catch me. I WANT it to catch me so that I haven't wasted both time and money. It just won't.
So first, the performance. It is hard to tell if Boyett is doing the best he can with terrible writing, or, if he is just a bad narrator. Either way, it translates into really over-dramatic inner monologues and expressions of emotion.
The characters are all incredibly annoying and unbelievable. I wish I could adequately describe how bad it is. It honestly feels like every character is the same. It feels like every conflict involves the same basic issues between characters A and B in any given chapter. As a result, the characters are simply plugged into either A or B, depending on whose perspective the chapter is written from. This means that overall, the characters are the same.
As an example, in one chapter character A dismisses a theory as fanatical and therefore ignores it when character B tries to talk to him about it. In a later chapter, that same character A takes on the role of attempting to tell character C about his theory concerning an issue and character C decides his theory is fanatical and ignores it.
The author fails to apply any logic to his characters and story. For example, there are two alien persons (of different species) on the ship. Both are proficient, beyond any human, in what they do. This would be fine, however, their proficiencies are not logical. One is proficient in space flight because she is a bird creature. Flying in atmosphere is not similar to space flight, so the correlation fails. The other alien (who is a fish) can read the physical "mircro-cues" of humans to tell if they are lying. This makes no sense, as another species should not be able to read the physical cues better than the actual species.... it is illogical if you put even 60 seconds of thought into it.
Lastly, the authors attempt to discuss politics is could originate from the mind of a child, The most important principle to in international (galactic in this case) politics, is that nations (or species), will do what is in their best interest. No nation acts out of altruism. This is an ACTUAL, REAL principle in ACTUAL, REAL global relations. To state that a government is evil because they will not share technological advancements in order to level the military playing field, is the height of naivety.
These are just a few things that have made this completely unbelievable and so thoroughly unenjoyable.

Maybe the story is good?
Revisado: 05-09-23
So I cannot honestly say if the story is any good. The performance is just simply awful. Not only is it flat and lifeless, it is also such that it is impossible to pay attention to. I have listened to chapters 2 and 3 twice and I cannot for the life of me, follow what the narrator is saying. I may just buy this one for actual reading and forget Clifton Duncan ever recorded the words I am reading.

Great Idea.... writing is ok
Revisado: 12-02-22
The idea is incredibly entertaining. The execution leaves something to be desired.
The writing is incredibly repetitive, sometimes saying the same thing within sentences of each other. With that being said, sometimes the writing is incredibly repetitive, sometimes saying the same thing within sentences of each other. Annoying, right? This continues throughout the entire series.
I am not a huge fan of the rambling and directionless way the story is presented. Sure, we eventually get from point A to point B, but we visit the entire alphabet in-between. Honestly, a plot hole has yet to be filled about where they get ________ (no spoilers) in book 6. In the middle of telling us how they got ________ (still no spoilers), he goes down a rabbit hole and doesn't get back to it..... yet..... I am not done the book, but I am two chapters further along. So even if he does get back to it, wow, quite the gap. (UPDATE: They got back to it 10 Chapters later)
I see lots of complaints about the coffee narrative and Rangers Rangering, and yea, it was annoying, but I got over it. I chalked it up to a main character who was actually annoying in his character's personality, and not bad writing. I have read other things by these guys, and I feel comfortable settling on the fact that this character's obsession with coffee and Rangers is just part of the character. Yes, I get that his obsession with Rangers is part of his character arc, in that he is praising these guys for doing all the things he is currently doing and he eventually comes to terms with the fact that he too is a Ranger. However, the character is still annoying.
I love the actual story here and, unfortunately, we don't get enough of it. We get great battle scenes. Very detailed and fun to listen to. What I want though is more actual story. These books are epic battles, with the story poorly and sparsely inserted as flash back. It is frustrating because there is so much story missing that I am dying to hear but is simply skipped.
With all that said, would I recommend the books, yes. Will I listen to them a second and possibly a third time when I am struggling to find something new, yes. The books are entertaining and fun. They encourage the imagination. Added bonus, all of the legit military speak helps you feel like less of a nerd while listening.
