Historia
From the sugar plantations of Saint-Domingue to the lavish parlors of New Orleans at the turn of the 19th century, Isabel Allende's latest novel tells the story of a mulatta woman, a slave and concubine, determined to take control of her own destiny in a society where that would seem impossible. Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Zarité - known as Tété - is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage.

Allende visits the Caribbean music to your ears
Revisado: 05-05-13
Would you listen to Island Beneath the Sea again? Why?
Probably not I rarely read books twice.
Have you listened to any of S. Epatha Merkerson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
She did a fabulous job to bring Allende's characters to life I hope to hear her again.
Any additional comments?
Why aren't there more Allende books available on Audible? Also loved the Latin accent of the narrator so suited the book.

Stunning amble through time
Revisado: 05-05-13
What made the experience of listening to The Hare with Amber Eyes the most enjoyable?
The concept of following objects through time worked so well. If you love a bit of art history told with the emphasis on history not technique you will enjoy the journey.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hare with Amber Eyes?
There were many moments that I still reflect upon but returning to find the objects after WWII via the loyal maid was very touching. Also finding out about his favourite uncle's life.
What does Michael Maloney bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Not sure as I think I would have loved the book just as much if I'd read it, but he does do the brilliant writing justice.

Historia
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early 40s, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Powerful but so sad
Revisado: 05-05-13
Where does The Casual Vacancy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's such a step away from other books I've listened to a much heavier plot and not an inkling of humour.
If you’ve listened to books by J. K. Rowling before, how does this one compare?
This is a totally different style from HP but I was very curious to see what a novel aimed at an adult audience would be like. JKR once again develops her characters with exceptional dexterity just a shame they are horrible and too fallible. It felt like an exorcism of the happy ending or child audience that she has been catering for over many years. Dark but I was compelled to see it to the end. I am interested in seeing what she comes up with next hopefully she will find her humour again, karaoke with Maureen was not getting a giggle going.
Have you listened to any of Tom Hollander’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First time I have heard him but I think he gave life to all of the characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No needed to break it up.
