I cannot get enough to the Butcher's Boy
Revisado: 01-13-23
I did not know that I was going to be so taken with these novels when I reluctantly tried the first. Wow was I wrong. For me they have every thing: trade craft; interesting characters; and plenty of action.
There is one further installment and I am to consume them all in just a few weeks.

Gunther knows that he must pursue the case to its conclusion, wherever it leads.

Historia
To all appearances, Dan Chase is a harmless retiree in Vermont with two big mutts and a grown daughter he keeps in touch with by phone. But most 60-year-old widowers don't have multiple driver's licenses, savings stockpiled in banks across the country, and a bugout kit with two Beretta Nanos stashed in the spare bedroom closet. Most have not spent decades on the run.

Unnecessary and unbelievable 2nd character
Revisado: 05-28-22
I thoroughly enjoyed about the hour and a half. The tradecraft and very good narration made up for any implausibilities. Then a second front-and-center character was introduced. As I said in the headline: this character was unnecessary, distracting and the relationship unbelievable. I was very disappointed.

Historia
When Leroy "Chinese" Gordon breaks into a professor's lab at the University of Los Angeles, he's after some pharmaceutical cocaine, worth plenty of money. Instead, he finds the papers the professor has compiled for the CIA, which include a blueprint for throwing a large city into chaos. But how is the CIA to be persuaded to pay a suitable ransom, unless of course someone actually uses the plan to throw a large city into chaos - Los Angeles, for instance?

This book made me so happy
Revisado: 05-21-22
I had never read anything by Thomas Perry before. A reviewer mentioned that this is Perry's only book with humor. If that is true how too bad. The characters, writing and narrator were perfect for me. Though essentially a "caper" story it does involve some killing. I was surprised each time but each was just right.

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

Gave up
Revisado: 02-15-21
I find that I am no longer interested in coming-of-age stories in general. When Gilbert started spending chapters on a teenager's discovery of a book detailing the supposed "erotic journey" of its anonymous author, I totally lost interest. I am returning the book.

Delightful and totally engaging
Revisado: 02-05-21
What a lovely book. I was entranced from beginning to end. There were the occasional moments where I thought:"I am *so* worried about what might happen to these people I love!" While that was true, never did I consider leaving them.
I found the book when looking for something else narrated by Juliet Stevenson. I had just finished "Once Upon a River" and could not imagine another voice I wanted to hear at that moment. Fortunately, Ms Stevenson is such and excellent narrator that every performance is unique to the particular book.
There is no way of knowing which book will grab which reader, I encourage you to give this a try.

DCI Walker makes me grind my teeth
Revisado: 05-30-20
I have very little tolerance for a main character who has no self awareness. When that is inevitably combined with an enormous chi- on-the-shoulder, I'm done. I found DCI Walker annoying, boring, and predictable. The rest of the characters were 2 dimensional also. I gave up after about an hour. Just not for me.
I also found the narrator to breathless and grating at the same time. Thank goodness for Audible's returns policy.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Very interesting content ruined for me by narrator
Revisado: 05-08-20
I know many, many people like Scott Brick's narration. I tried. Really I did. Even though this is a subject about which I am fascinated, I could not take any more after 7 hours or so. Brick, despite his sort of flat voice, manages to read this dramatic material with melodramatic pacing and tone. The thought of listening to another 12 hours of Brick's ruining of this excellent story, finally moved me to gave up.
I am happy to say that I have released myself from having to listen another minuet to him.

Historia
Great Britain, 1923: When Detective Inspector John Redfyre is invited to attend the annual St. Barnabas College Christmas concert in his Aunt Henrietta's stead, he is expecting a quiet evening. But he arrives to witness a minor scandal: Juno Proudfoot, the trumpeter of the headlining musical duo, is a woman, and a young one at that - practically unheard of in conservative academic circles. When she suffers a near-fatal fall after the close of the show, Redfyre must consider whether someone was trying to kill her.

Tried to like this book
Revisado: 02-09-20
I purchased this because of some positive reviews. However, I found myself annoyed with what seemed to be the author's agendas (for example feminist politics - and I hasten to mention that I am a feminist), which did to seem to be her characters' agendas. The characters required most often to give "lectures" seemed very two dimensional. I gave up after about 90 minutes.

Historia
The audiobook begins just after the US presidential election, when a man of Trump's stripe wins. Determined to push him out of office, members of the president's staff hire an assassin to set up three terrorist attacks in the US. Meanwhile, a Pentagon general contacts mid-level intelligence operatives in 15 different countries, concocting a plot in which the president will be faced with supposed attacks along flash points, places where trouble could easily erupt into an all-out nuclear war....

Just not for me!
Revisado: 01-23-20
I had hopes for this book given some of the reviews I had read. However the combination of 2 dimensional characters, clichéd writing and a narrator who seemed as bored as I was made it clear this book was a waste of a credit. No thanks.
