Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

Inspiring, Riveting
Revisado: 02-10-18
This offers a comparison of two groups of marooned sailors. Sounds dull, huh? Anything but! Their efforts to survive will pull you in. Recommended reading for leaders, folks wanting a bit of inspiration, and anyone going through a hard time. I couldn't stop listening the last 4 hours, wanting to know who would survive. Love it!

Almost Perfect

The ending is a bit ta-da! Until that, however, I enjoyed this immensely. The narrator is so good I forgot he was just one person. I finished this in under 24 hours, and that should say it all.

Historia
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Duller than Dishwater
Revisado: 02-03-18
Droningly, mindnumbingly dull. The first two chapters ARE loaded with interesting info, but it is downhill from there. This could have been great; clearly a story is there. Sadly, the author chooses instead to descend into summaries of Dicken's works and recitations of facts. If a student turned this in, I would refuse to accept it until they found their voice.
Someone, please, call Eric Larsen and ask him to write the tale of Dickens and A Christmas Carol. It is a great idea for a story, Dickens deserves better than this, and Larsen is our best nonfiction author.

Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Laugh, Smile, Renew Hope
Revisado: 01-27-18
If you could sum up The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared in three words, what would they be?
Funny, warm, silly
What other book might you compare The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared to and why?
A Connecticut Yankee in King Author's Court by Mark Twain
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud.
Any additional comments?
I love this book. It's been two years since I've listened to it, and it still stands out. This book is warm, and funny, and parts are ridiculous. It is a joy, and left me very much wanting to go on an adventure myself. If you're ok with the premise of a 100 year old climbing out of a window to get a drink, you'll enjoy this book.

Cute
Revisado: 11-09-16
The voice performance is great, the plot is weak. There is little mystery. The focus is on the recurring characters, and the newlyweds drip saccharine. I don't regret the hours I spent listening, but I was worn out by the cuteness by the last two hours.

Includes the Mysteries of Light! For many Christians the rosary is a signifcant pathway to prayer and intimacy with God. Indeed, the rosary not only introduces us to the mysteries (life events) of Christ's life, but into the living mystery of Christ himself. In this recording, the St. Anthony Messenger Press staff prays the joyful, sorrowful, glorious and luminous mysteries of the rosary as an aid for your prayer. Each mystery begins with a Scripture verse and/or meditation.

Revisado: 10-15-16
Each decade has a powerful thought. It is paced perfectly, without rushing or dragging. I'm grateful for this Rosary, and love listening to it regularly. The Rosary blesses us with a scripture based walk through the life of Jesus, and this version helps make that daily walk a joy.

Fun Romp!
Revisado: 05-07-16
What a fun romp! This is a marvelous, light adventure as Mrs. Pollifax sets out on her first trip as a CIA courier. She's 60+ and resourceful. Yes, it's a bit farfetched, but I listened in two days, staying up late and getting up early so I could listen before work. I'm still smiling from the wonderful way this listen made me feel. If you want a listen that gives you a great good time, this is it. And, it's more than a little inspirational for this old fuddy duddy.
