Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Richard Armitage! - what a great narrator!
Revisado: 03-09-24
My first “reading” of the text of this marvelous book. Stunned by the writing for sure! But how Armitage managed being 25 plus characters is a wonder. All were different voices. All were fully acted as if on stage. His characterization of Uriah Heep and Wilkins Micawber in Chapter 52 (the “Explosion”) is genius and several LOL moments.
Yes it is long but many delightful characters never make it into the many films. Plus no film can capture the amazing writing and fullness of expression that writing does best.

Historia
In the latest volume of his celebrated series of Time Traveler's Guides, Ian Mortimer turns to what is arguably the most-loved period in British history—the Regency, or Georgian England. A time of exuberance, thrills, frills, and unchecked bad behavior, it was perhaps the last age of true freedom before the arrival of the stifling world of Victorian morality. At the same time, it was a period of transition. Conveying the sights, sounds, and smells of the Regency period, this is history at its most exciting—the past not as something to be studied, but as lived experience.

Don’t Skip This Book if…
Revisado: 01-02-24
You are interested in the particular, the minutia that make up the every day lives of people in the past. I learned so much!
I did not follow everything especially as pertains to the everyday cost of goods for example because I am not familiar with English money enough to easily comprehend.
I got a real sense of the time period.
I disagree with another reviewer that the last chapter ruined the book. It acted like an author’s introduction. I do not think he was judging harshly past practices — like hanging boys of 7 for minor stealing for instance. Nor can the people in the past be upset for not being able to defend themselves. (Other living persons who think past cruel practices were somehow just can try to defend them.) Certainly in no way do such practices reflect everyone living in the Regency period anyhow. It seems to me that the fact such cruelty was changed later on in the 19th century speaks volumes. It is the author’s book and he can say what he wants.
I am hoping the author is working on the Victorian period! Thanks so much for such enjoyably presented material.

Historia
George Eliot's first full-length novel is the moving, realistic portrait of three people troubled by unwise love. Adam Bede is a hardy young carpenter who cares for his aging mother. His one weakness is the woman he loves blindly: the trifling town beauty, Hetty Sorrel, who delights only in her baubles - and the delusion that the careless Captain Donnithorne may ask for her hand.

Narration beautifully complex!
Revisado: 11-28-23
As others have said, beautiful narration. My first Eliot novel and her explanatory diversions were a bit disruptive to my thinking but interesting nonetheless-the-less. Characters were great. I listened to the BBC play version first and that was totally captivating so in comparison this plodded along somewhat with detailed diversions into well crafted minor characters. But it is all good!

Superb performances
Revisado: 11-06-23
I liked Blake, Wordsworth, Byron and Coleridge best. Don Juan by Byron is genius. A terrific female voice which sounded like another performer. Love listening to poetry. The musical element in so many poems was so strong and you hear it! A great education. I listened several times and will listen again.

A full-cast dramatisation of this comic tale about an 18th-century gentleman who tries to tell his life story but continually finds that he must digress.... Featuring some of the best known and most well-loved characters in English literature, including Uncle Toby, Corporal Trim, Dr Slop and the Widow Wadman. Beginning (or attempting to begin) at the moment of his own conception, Tristram Shandy recounts his progress through the world and utterly fails to stick to the point.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

I highly recommend this audible program. The reader was remarkable in differentiating from male and female voice without any apparent strain. Her voice was pleasant, and I never grew tired of it.
