Historia
It’s a hot and sticky Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Glory has settled into her usual after-church routine, meeting gamblers at the local coffee shop, where she works as a small-time bookie. Sitting at her corner table, Glory hears that her best friend—a nun beloved by the community—has been found dead in her apartment. When the police declare the mysterious death a suicide, Glory is convinced that there must be more to the story and, with her reluctant daughter in tow, launches a shadow investigation in a town of oil tycoons, church gossips, and a rumored voodoo priestess.

Best book I read this year!
Revisado: 12-23-23
I don't write many reviews. I find it takes time away from reading. But this book deserves a review. Glory B is by far the best book I read in 2023. I simply cannot wait to read another Glory book. Or any book by this author. Glory is a perfect character. She is a truly good person who has been on this earth enough years to be disappointed by people over and over again, and it has turned her, as disappointment invariably will, into a bitter woman who sometimes wants to just hide under the covers. The raw truthfulness of how the author shows us Glory is what makes her perfect. Other than our sex and our age, Glory and I have very little in common. I am an older white woman who grew up in a large Midwestern city, while she is an older black woman from southern Louisiana. I have no religious background, which in the Midwest simply means Baptist by Default, while Glory is a (somewhat) staunch Catholic. I should actually struggle to relate to this character. Instead, I long to sit in the shade of a large tree and drink iced tea with her, and talk about all the ways folks have disappointed me too. I want to help Glory solve her next mystery. I want to be her friend. Like I said, she's the perfect character.

There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Still on my mind!
Revisado: 01-25-21
I couldn't put this one down. It had me wrapped up pretty quickly and kept me guessing. If there is one flaw, (and folks will argue this), it is the ending. I would argue this is a book for thinkers, so let us decide. Of course, I'm still thinking about the implications of this book, including the ending, so maybe this is how it ends.
I highly recommend this book. Very well written with characters I cared about. No bad guys? One bad guy? everybody's a bad guy? Certainly every character is human, which in the end, is all that matters.

Historia
Renée Ballard is working the night beat again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch.

Ballard and Bosch make a good team
Revisado: 12-29-18
I liked this book. Ballard is a great addition to the Connelly library. Her and Bosch work well together, and including her brings bosch back to life. He can use her access to information to continue to work cases, and her youth to get them solved. Connelly showed Bosch's age and vulnerability in this one and it's time. Bosch will die a real character, just as he lived. Thank you Connelly for giving him dignity in his old age.

excellent look at twain
Revisado: 12-26-18
I love over this look at an American icon. They manage to truthfully examine both Twain's brilliance and his flaws, I'll leaving the reader to decide for themselves how to view Twain's place in history. It was a wonderful execution.

Moriarty does it again!
Revisado: 11-18-18
I admit it. I am a character junkie. Create wonderful, flawed, beliveable characters, and I forgive all other writing sins. ALL of them. Set the characters at a fancy resort I would never consider going to if I COULD afford it. Give me a slow pace. Confuse the narraton. Just give me characters I know, the ones who stumble along with me on this planet, imperfect and brilliant and beautiful.

This is good writing. It's a good book. I just didn't like Ike the main character. She kept making truly dumb choices when she should have run for the hills.

Disappointed
Revisado: 07-11-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book is not ever going to be a 4 or 5 star book.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The idea is wonderful. The writing is bad. There is a wonderful potential for multiple perspectives. However, it's impossible to tell the 37 year-old Jen from the 13 year old, which would be perfect except none of the other characters can tell the difference either. The dialogue is stilted and awkward. Awkward in the way that you feel bad for the writer as you listen.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator is very bad, perhaps the worst narrator I've listened to. Her accents are awful and she misses a lot of inflections. A lot.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The concept is good.

Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."
