Historia
In this delightfully chilling collection, the iconic Jeanette Winterson turns her fearless gaze to the realm of ghosts, interspersing her own encounters with the supernatural alongside hair-raising fictions. Lifting the veil between the living and the dead, Winterson spirits us away to a haunted estate that ensnares a nomadic young couple in its own dark past, a staged immersive ghost tour gone awry, a West Village seance that threatens the bounds between AI and reality, and a vacation home in the metaverse where a widow visits an improved version of her deceased husband.

Just ok
Revisado: 09-23-24
I was hoping this would recreate the magic of Christmas Days, but alas it fell pretty flat for me. I was also surprised that Thin Air from Christmas Days was simply included in this collection, The narrator was not as mesmerizing as Imogen either.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

I loved The Martian, but I adored this book! It had me sobbing towards the end… in a good way :). The narrator does a fantastic job as well. What a wonderful journey this has been!

Too much fatphobia
Revisado: 10-24-22
I have been mostly enjoying this series, but there are too many instances of characters referring to other characters’ weight in a negative way. Thursday’s Children especially is guilty of that.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Interesting, but kinda dull
Revisado: 08-17-22
As much as I appreciated the construction of and ideas in this book, the actual reading experience of it was not very enjoyable. I found myself bored more than anything.

Historia
I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter - for whom this book was written - from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers.

Overly dramatic
Revisado: 06-07-22
I love Maggie O’Farrell’s novels, but I had to dnf her non fiction book. Between the overly dramatic narration and the concept of “near death” (death doesn’t have degrees of happenstance, you’re either dead or you’re not), this was just not for me.

Historia
The most popular and beloved American historical novel ever written, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind is unparalleled in its portrayal of men and women at once larger than life but as real as ourselves. Now best-selling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett.

Not a fan of the narration
Revisado: 05-20-22
I might have enjoyed this audiobook more had the narrator not make Rhett sound like an 80 year old man… It’s quite refreshing to be spared all the racism of Gone With the Wind, but GWTD is a much better book.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Excellent narration, but story not for me
Revisado: 04-05-22
The narration is excellent, but overall this kind of story is not for me. I wanted to try because it was $4 and I was curious to see what the big deal was. Definitely not for me. I can’t help wondering, where are the women in this world???

Mostly boring
Revisado: 02-14-22
I tried to read his book once before (in physical form), but couldn’t get past the first 85 pages… I just found it mostly boring and I didn’t like the writing style. I thought I’d try the audio, as I love Imogen Church’s readings. But I still can’t get behind this story, I still find it mostly boring, the characters are insipid, and despite the fact that I usually love this narrator, I don’t like her inflection or the different voices.

Historia
Mesopotamia is the ancient name for the region that is now Iraq, a remarkably advanced civilization that flourished for two-thirds of the time that civilization has existed on Earth. Mesopotamians mastered irrigation agriculture; built the first complex urban societies; developed writing, literature, and law; and united vast regions through warfare and diplomacy. While civilizations like Greece and Rome have an unbroken tradition of written histories, the rich history of Mesopotamia has only been recently rediscovered, thanks to the decipherment of Mesopotamia's cuneiform writing less than 200 years ago.

Enthralling, illuminating and utterly fascinating. I’m looking forward to learning even more about cuneiform script and life in ancient Mesopotamia.
