Rachel Bloom is My Hero
Revisado: 03-31-25
I loved every minute of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and have followed Rachel Bloom on social media for years but the raw honesty and vulnerability, keen insights into humanity, and quirky hilarity displayed in this book made me a fan and devotee for life. From all the weird, neurodivergent theater kids who are now regular adults with a lot of baggage, thank you, Rachel.

Historia
Teenage Eulabee and her alluring best friend, Maria Fabiola, own the streets of Sea Cliff, their foggy, oceanside San Francisco neighborhood. They know the ins and outs of the homes and beaches, Sea Cliff’s hidden corners and eccentric characters - as well as the swanky all-girls’ school they attend. Their lives move along uneventfully, with afternoon walks by the ocean and weekend sleepovers. Then everything changes. Eulabee and Maria Fabiola have a disagreement about what they did or didn’t witness on the way to school one morning, and this creates a schism in their friendship.

Beautiful, mysterious coming of age tale
Revisado: 04-10-22
Vendela Vida did a fabulous job of bringing these characters and settings to life. I found her descriptions poetic. As a woman in my 40s, I found the characters and situations authentic and relatable. I loved the infusion of details about Swedish ex pat culture. This is not a plot driven book but a character study so if you’re looking for a riveting plot with lots of twists and turns and a satisfying whodunit type ending, this is not for you. If you want to immerse yourself in a beautiful, tragic, and mysterious female Bildungsroman, you’ll love this.
