Reads like a textbook
Revisado: 08-06-24
I was hoping for more inspirational stories but this read more like a scientific history textbook of fitness. At times I couldn’t follow the stories that were shared, as the author would bounce back and forth through timelines and try to tie them in with the scientific research at the time. Not inspiring, didn’t provide any actionable lessons, nor could I even tell you the “so what” of each chapter. I quit halfway through and wasted an audible credit. The narrator sounded great and clear.

E. H. Gombrich's world history, an international best seller now available in English for the first time, is a text dominated not by dates and facts but by the sweep of experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity's achievements, and an acute witness to its frailties.

Historia
The secret behind France's astonishingly well-behaved children is here. When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn't aspire to become a "French parent". French parenting isn't a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren't doing anything special. But French children are far better behaved and more in command of themselves than American kids....

Guidance buried beneath anecdotes and French accents
Revisado: 12-09-22
I think I’d enjoy this book more if: 1. I wasn’t looking for research-driven insights, and wanted to listen to a memoir or someone’s personal experience 2. I was fascinated / maybe even a little obsessed with French culture, and 3. Knew a bit of French words. That being said, since this wasn’t very research driven and more of a personal memoir of the author’s experience and observations in France, I wasn’t a huge fan. The accents were a major distraction - anytime she quotes a person she met or even quotes research papers, the narrator puts on a French / Dutch / English / American accent. Felt more like reading through a play than a parenting book. It also feels much more targeted to upper middle class families. I suppose I expected at least some American parenting techniques that were effective, but different, than the French. But there is nothing positive about American parents in this book - the French do everything perfectly and the rest of the world should learn from them. I did enjoy the insights on French parenting when she eventually shared them, but otherwise felt it was a lot of personal anecdotal info that wasn’t helpful nor interesting.

Fantastic Research-based Guide for Moms-to-be
Revisado: 11-29-22
I loved this audiobook. I tore through it in three days as soon as we decided to start a family. After struggling to find a research-based pregnancy book, I’m SO glad this was the first book I read. As someone who needs to know the “why” before following standard advice, I appreciated Oster’s detailed research and summaries for every pre and postnatal topic you can think of. She outlines the standard advice, follows with where that advice came from, details recent studies, then succinctly provides the pro’s and con’s. This is followed by a short summary of how to take that information to make your OWN decisions. I now have a strong foundation moving forward. I did find the inflections and long pauses distracting, but after increasing the speed to 1.1x and getting through a few chapters I adjusted pretty quickly. Topics I wanted to learn more about that weren’t included or weren’t in depth: How to pick a prenatal vitamin, and Logistics of labor/coming home (I.e. what items to bring, how to prepare your house and car). I can find these topics elsewhere easily, and would still highly recommend this book. In fact, I downloaded her next book Cribsheet which I suspect goes over everything after birth in much more detail.
In summary: If you’re someone who wants to be empowered to make your own decisions after thorough research, get this book pronto!!!

Would you like to know how the universe works? Scientists have been asking that question for a long time and have found that many of the answers can be found in the study of particle physics, the field that focuses on those impossibly tiny particles with unbelievably strange names - the hadrons and leptons, baryons and mesons, muons and gluons - so mystifying to the rest of us.
