Historia
What does “Give them Lala” mean? It means giving the truest, most honest version of yourself to the world. It means being authentic, bold, adventurous, and having an unapologetic approach to life. Hollywood is where Lauren Burningham, aspiring actress from Utah, fully embraced her alter-ego Lala Kent, entrepreneur, entertainer, and film and television star. Some say she’s rude; Lala says she claps back. Some say she’s too bold; Lala knows she’s reality TV gold. Truth is, without giving them Lala, Lauren could never have become the woman she is today.

Solid storytelling, excellent narration. Honestly and vulnerability. Top notch. I thought I’d be laughing the entire way through. Instead, I listened and understood.

I listened to Mays’ book on audio for my first time through. The Betrayal Bind was recommended by my therapist. It’s one of my lifelines, keeping me as calm tethered as can be when every day is unpredictable. My second time through, I’ll listen, read and take notes.

Don't Take This Review Personally
Revisado: 04-23-24
I read The Craving Mind purely to get CEUs for my professional license renewal. The first 6 chapters were required for a course. I finished it. I listened on Audible and the narrator was monotone, stiffly reaching for some inflection.
The Craving Mind, however, is a match with other bits I've been drawn to lately. More and more, I'm tapping into meditation as a cornerstone of life. Although Brewer's a tad convoluted and in need of editing assistance, his book's cumulative impact is helpful and applicable. I applied its lessons soon after I finshed the read. I stopped an old tape in my head, let go of the thought, and aborted an email mid sentence. Soone after, the thought was released. Pretty amazing. Much more difficult to beat if my story/reaction is in response to someone I am closer to, but still workable. A life's work. It's brilliant to feel more aware, freeeing.
I'm happy to have the book on Audible to refer to at my leisure. I garnered useful bits that are rolling around in my head, in no particular order. I jotted some down:
Enjoy the activity for its own sake.
Freedom from my own ideas.
Don't take things personally. (How is this impacting me?)
This gives you the possibility of opening up and your suffering decreases.
Compassion without attachment.
Do not take suffering personally, allowing your energy to free up in order to help.
Instead of walking in someone's shoes, walk beside them.
A thought is simply a word or image in our mind
until we think it is so great, we can't get it out of our heads.
A craving is just a craving unless we get sucked into it.
How we relate to our thoughts and feelings makes all the difference.
Do not take your thoughts personally.

Life Changing
Revisado: 04-23-24
This is a phenomenal book. It's a modern and expanded take on Allen Carr's work. Leave it to a woman to come up with something better. Annie Grace has given her life to researching alcohol and it's impact on the body, mind and spirit. She has a Podcast, Website (of course) and several online programs to choose from, including a free (free!) 30 day gig called The Alcohol Experiment. She doesn't proselytize. She informs with facts and compassion.
It's up to you if you want to quit alcohol, moderate, or remain the same. C'mon, this information won't hurt you. It will help you.
I've always thought the alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) field was messed up. That's why I changed my professional goals halfway through my Master's program at age 23.
I wish I could've seen my way to revolutionizing the field like Annie has. I'm so happy she did.

Please Pass the Atlas
Revisado: 04-23-24
This book, my first read of Brown's books, came recommended by people I trust, coaches and friends. I asked my family for it. Birthday gift, please. Initially, I was annoyed with Brown's voice. I dismissed her white lady academic speak. I kept reading. As I read, I was able to put the book to use. During, and in the end, I have to admit, beautiful as the book is, I do not consider it a coffee table book. It's readable and applicable. Can I call it a friend? That might be going overboard, or perhaps it isn't.
We had to euthanize our dog, Oliver, recently. Or as I more often say, help him pass peacefully. We lost our best friend, my constant companion, my daughter's childhood dog. Atlas of the Heart allowed me to identify my emotion, and my daughter's, as Anguish. You might think, of course! Look, the subtle differences between words mean a lot. And the emotions they carry are more difficult to identify when your heart is breaking into a million pieces and the road ahead is long.
I have had many conversations with my daughter about the loss of her childhood dog, college essays and writer's block, peer interaction and challenges, addiction, connection and disconnection, staying true to yourself while empathzing with others - just to name a few. Brené Brown's Atlas of the Heart came to my aid, sharpening my ability to listen, hear, discuss and connect.
The concepts of, near enemies and far enemies, cultivating meaningful connection, walking alongside, controlling the path, walking away, practicing story stewardship, narrative tap-out and narrative takeover are highlighted after a descriptive list of emotions. All insightful and pertinent.

No Wonder I Feel a Bit At Large
Revisado: 04-23-24
The Untethered Soul came recommended by several aquaintances. I finally popped it onto my 2023 list and checked it out of the library. I have a cute little hardcover copy. It feels good in my hands. Singer's text made me feel anxious from the start, untethered. His directions were beyond my firm grasp. Eventually, with laughter grounding me (humorous examples of common human behavior), I began to understand. My feeling is Singer's book is, of course, similar to other books teaching enlightenment practices, yet it is very much its own. I am able to apply what I have learned. On to the sequel, after a couple more reads.

We Are Not Our Thoughts (Or Our Reviews)
Revisado: 04-23-24
Brilliant. Understandable. Yet, for me, still elusive. I plan to read and listen, again, to each chapter, slowly. A friend is going to read Living Untethered too, as she is on a similar journey. We are going to discuss the book. This will help me/us practice what Singer teaches.
We are our consciouness, our awareness. We are not our thoughts, our stories. Humans cause our own suffering. If we can be with what is, not resist, we will decrease our suffering and live free.
On I go, to the first chapter and my second read and listen through.

Porter's book kicks ass! Science and logic at its best with a dose of compassion. Listening to the book on Audible makes it stick. Repetition while resting, eyes closed. *Click* Porter's clear rational explanation of a complex subject takes hold. Genius.
William Porter's Alcohol Explained and This Naked Mind by Annie Grace, are the perfect pair of reads on this subject.

Just when Glennon Doyle Melton was beginning to feel she had it all figured out - three happy children, a doting spouse, and a writing career so successful that her first book catapulted to the top of the New York Times best seller list - her husband revealed his infidelity and she was forced to realize that nothing was as it seemed. A recovering alcoholic and bulimic, Glennon found that rock bottom was a familiar place. In the midst of crisis, she knew to hold on to what she discovered in recovery: that her deepest pain has always held within it an invitation to a richer life.

Being Human
Revisado: 04-23-24
Often my expectations (e.g. regarding marriage) and experience are radically different from Doyle's. Our disparities make her appealling and engaging. I almost always learn something new. Yes, sometimes I roll my eyes and laugh. More often than not, my mind is opened, and I feel more receptive and flexible.
Love Warrior is so f-ing good. Doyle writes well and captures what is is like to be human. This book has been on my radar forever, and a friend recommended I read it now, as my current life experience is woven intimately into the fibers of Love Warrior's pages. Presently, it's our similarities that compliment our dissimilarities. If I am completely honest, at this point in time, her podcast and books are my lifelines, along with dogs. I love dogs.

Abby Wambach? Yes, please.
Revisado: 04-23-24
I'm biased before I begin. I like Abby Wambach. Close friends who knew, gave me this book. I added it to Audible to hear Abby read her memoir. At one point, I stopped and googled, "Did Abby Wambach write Forward?" It's not that I don't think she could. I was just curious. Listening to her read, the text rolled on smoothly. Good writing, I thought. Later, I read a few reviews slamming Wambach's writing. I picked up the book and sat down to follow. I determined that her voice and presentation probably brought the experience up a notch or two or three or.... Still, I thought the writing was satisfying - clear, honest, easy to follow and understand - with good story-telling. Did I tell you that I like Abby Wambach? Oh yeah, I do.
