Historia
Famed across the known world, jealously guarded by private collectors, built up over centuries, destroyed in a single day, ornamented with gold leaf and frescoes or filled with bean bags and children's drawings - the history of the library is rich, varied and stuffed full of incident. In this, the first major history of its kind, Andrew Pettegree and Arthur der Weduwen explore the contested and dramatic history of the library

Narrator ruins it
Revisado: 02-06-23
I had a hard copy of this on the shelf but thought to listen to it on the drive to work instead. Unfortunately, the narrator is monotonous in tone and his diction isn't clear (very nasal in quality). Read the book instead.

Great Story, annoying narrator
Revisado: 03-13-21
The different voices attempted by the narrator fir each character were faintly ridiculous, and detracted from the story a little.

Fabulous story, performed well
Revisado: 01-09-21
Regarding the audiobook, this was so well read. One of the best I've listened to in terms of performance. Having different voices for the characters made this really come alive, even while the text was faithfully adhered to. The story itself is weird, bizarre, dark and multi-layered, but great as well.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Revisado: 12-15-20
Starts a bit like an audio version of a video game, with levelling up and skills and inventories etc. But becomes a great middle school fantasy story. The 5 star rating is from my son.

Can you imagine writing to Father Christmas and actually getting a reply? Every year, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien would write to Father Christmas, and the letters they received told wonderful stories of his adventures at the North Pole. These humorous tales are brought to life by Derek Jacobi as Father Christmas, John Moffatt as Polar Bear, and Christian Rodska as Ilbereth the Elf, complete with specially composed music.

Music interrupts the flow
Revisado: 12-06-20
My children and I enjoyed this book a lot, but the music in between the letters was very distracting! We struggled to finish the book because the flow was interrupted constantly.

Historia
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement.

Mixed Bag
Revisado: 05-30-20
The first 2/3 was written in a dry, mechanical prose, and I failed to feel a connection to the characters or become invested in the plot. The narrators slightly monotonous voice didn't help with this aspect either. The last 1/3 however, where Gendry and Therem travel over the ice and form a bond, was much better. The ending was quite powerful and saved the book from a lower rating in my view.

Historia
If you could travel back in time, the period from 1660 to 1700 would make one of the most exciting destinations in history. It's the age of Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London, bawdy comedy and the libertine court of Charles II, Christopher Wren in architecture, Henry Purcell in music and Isaac Newton in science. In The Time Traveller's Guide to Restoration Britain, Ian Mortimer answers the crucial questions that a prospective traveller to 17th-century Britain would ask.

Revisado: 05-06-20
The best by far of the three volumes (to date) of Ian Mortimer's Time Traveller's Guides. Packed full of detail and social analysis, and combined with gentle wit, this was a great read. The narrator has a pleasant tone and reads at a measured pace.

A cutting account of the decline of suburban America in the 1970s, told in a dark and disturbing fashion, through the lense of local adolescents. At times funny, sad, shocking and perverse, this is an unusual book well worth listening to. Just make sure to speed up the drawling narration.

Great reading of a poor sequel
Revisado: 11-01-17
This book is narrated in 3rd person, rather than the first person narration of the earlier books. This may have affected my engagement with the characters, for I found this book somewhat flat compared with the first three. The ending was shambolic and inconsistent which really bothered me. The audible narration was however top quality.
