Historia
World War II endures in the popular imagination as a heroic struggle between good and evil, with villainous Hitler driving its events. But Hitler was not in power when the conflict erupted in Asia. His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin’s War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east.

I was gravely disappointed with this savage rewriting of World War II history. I do not understand how McMeekin could hold Roosevelt and Churchill complicit in the crimes of Stalin. It is my belief that Roosevelt provided the resources while Russian did the fighting and dying. I agree that Stalin and his Communist Party were monsters and they had their own agenda even as they sought avoid the war. It backfired. But to have the Roosevelt Administration in collaboration with Stalin is nonsense. Russia experienced horrific losses and only survived due to American aid. Even then, Russia's social and economic conditions were slowly recovering from a devastating war with little assistance from America. Stalin may have won "His War" but he lost a lasting peace. There is too much anger in this book. I was both disgusted and tired of the tone of of this overly stated and I came to doubt the author's sincereity.

Historia
A terrible darkness has fallen upon Jacob Weisz’s beloved Germany. The Nazi regime, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, has surged to power and now hold Germany by the throat. All non-Aryans - especially Jews like Jacob and his family - are treated like dogs. When tragedy strikes during one terrible night of violence, Jacob flees and joins rebel forces working to undermine the regime. But after a raid goes horribly wrong, Jacob finds himself in a living nightmare - trapped in a crowded, stinking car on the train to the Auschwitz death camp.

Auschwitz Odyssey
Revisado: 09-09-20
I was absorbed by this book. This book had a strong sense of truth along with the struggle of sheer survival. My grandfather was born in Crimea as a German Jew. They were forced out with little to carry with them. If they had declared to be Jewish , I doubt they would have been admitted. The hatred of the Jewish People is pervasive even in the United State, This book clearly documents this hatred although the most violent form rested in Europe. This book did not have the kind of ending that reflects the reality to resist in all manners even in the United States.

Historia
When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months.

Survivorship in a Concentration Camp (Auschwitz)
Revisado: 08-02-20
I was mesmerized by this very story. I felt such a sense of loss for the banal cruelty of a group of people whose lives had already destroyed. I was sickened by the factory style execution regardless of age or sex. I am at a loss to understand how this can happened aside from a horrible hatred of the Jewish people. I gained an understanding "prisoner work" groups used to process the execution and incineration of our prisoners in such s manner that they ceased to exist, Then every four month, the "workers" were executed in turn. What a hellish way to survive but very necessary" The Doctor has provided a valuable with experience. I admire his courage and intelligence in surviving this ordeal and saving his. This is a Tremendous story and should be saved for the ages.

Historia
One month in 1865 witnessed the frenzied fall of Richmond, a daring last-ditch Southern plan for guerrilla warfare, Lee's harrowing retreat, and then, Appomattox. It saw Lincoln's assassination just five days later and a near-successful plot to decapitate the Union government, followed by chaos and coup fears in the North, collapsed negotiations and continued bloodshed in the South, and finally, the start of national reconciliation.

The Savagery of a Civil War
Revisado: 07-20-20
The American Civil War was fought to a very bitter end. The South was fighting for a stalemate by inflicting as many causalties even in defeat. Grant assault on Lee was massive and nonstop even at the risk of losing political support. This was America's most devastating war along with many long term consequences. Sherman march through Georgia was brutal and broke the back of the South. April was the month that the North won the war but it was a very costly victory with sense of loss. Lincoln was assassinated at a time when leadership was greatly needed. American Civil War was the second revolution by ending slavery and adding the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th amendments to Constitution. This could have only happen with the South out of the Union. Ultimately, the Republican Party abandon African Americans in their pursuit of power. This would a temporary set to be addressed by another American generation.

Historia
La moria grandissima began its terrible journey across the European and Asian continents in 1347, leaving unimaginable devastation in its wake. Five years later, 25 million people were dead, felled by the scourge that would come to be called the Black Death. The Great Mortality is the extraordinary epic account of the worst natural disaster in European history - a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminates humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born.

Culture of the Black Death
Revisado: 07-20-20
The author gives me great insight of the behaviors of the Europeans especially with genocidal assault of the Jews or the "flagellant" movement. The irrational behavior of the various European societies would enhance the growth of the Black Death when it would made sense to find a scientific basis for this plague. Frankly, I have such a low opinion of religions when it it consistently fails to protect minorities in times of hysteria. I did note Pope Clement VI forbade the killing of Jews but failed after Clement VI. The interrelationship of the plague with Europeans can be argued that in the long run European can out stronger after a century long ordeal. But I was not impressed with behavior before then.

Historia
Six close friends shaped the role their country would play in the dangerous years following World War II. They were the original best and brightest, whose towering intellects, outsize personalities, and dramatic actions would bring order to the postwar chaos, and whose strong response to Soviet expansionism would leave a legacy that dominates American policy to this day. In April 1945, they converged to advise an untutored new president, Harry Truman.

Great History
Revisado: 07-10-20
Foremost, this was well written along with a superb narrative. of a complicated story. This country badly needs the services of the Wise Men. Considering the nincompoops in office now, this country is being badly served. I have always admired these six men even though I had disagreed with them over Vietnam. I believe the very best service provided by these six men was with the accession to power of Harry Truman. Truman enabled and supported these men a manner unlike the tactics of Roosevelt. They were able to steer United States through post World War II and successful built a great Western Alliance. This is a great legacy from which this country can still build. I was moved by the authors insights of each man in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. I felt I knew each man along with their motivations. What a powerful story.

Historia
England's turbulent seventeenth century is vividly laid out before us, but so too is the cultural and social life of the period, notable for its extraordinarily rich literature, including Shakespeare's late masterpieces, Jacobean tragedy, the poetry of John Donne and Milton, and Thomas Hobbes's great philosophical treatise, Leviathan. Rebellion also gives us a very real sense of the lives of ordinary English men and women, lived out against a backdrop of constant disruption and uncertainty.

English Rebellion
Revisado: 06-11-20
Peter Ackroyd superbly documents this agonizing transition to a modern monarchy. James I was determined to reinstate the authority of his monarchy along with establishing state Catholic faith. England was facing a civil war at a time of growing international tensions. The Glorious Revolution was the most effect means of preserving state sponsored Protestant religion and build alliances with other countries. This allowed English Parliment to come with the Dutch Monarchy and support the overthrow of James I.

Historia
In May 1315 it started to rain. It didn't stop anywhere in north Europe until August. Next came the four coldest winters in a millennium. Two separate animal epidemics killed nearly 80 percent of northern Europe's livestock. Wars between Scotland and England, France and Flanders, and two rival claimants to the Holy Roman Empire destroyed all remaining farmland. After seven years, the combination of lost harvests, warfare, and pestilence would claim six million lives - one eighth of Europe's total population.

Climate Change in the 14th Century
Revisado: 06-11-20
I have a much better understanding of English/Scottish conflict in the 14th Century, The climate change that led to the great famine impacting the horrific war between England and Scotland, The English armies failed to understand the broad and lethal effects of the famine affecting Europe and England to the degree that it was possible to sustain large armies in the field. This famine also undermine English leadership in a period of great instability and social upheaval. This is is a valuable story for contemporary society.

The destruction of Atlanta is an iconic moment in American history - it was the centerpiece of the hugely successful book and movie Gone with the Wind. But though the epic sieges of Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Berlin have all been explored in best-selling histories, the one great American example has been treated only cursorily as a footnote. Marc Wortman remedies that conspicuous absence in grand fashion with The Bonfire.

Rich Civil War History
Revisado: 05-11-20
I have read extensively of the American Civil as a student. This book has added to my understanding of a very violent and heroic period. The author has laid an excellent foundation for the development, growth, decline, and renewal all within the context of the Civil War. The narrator was quite interesting and kept this difficult story moving. This was a great read with many side points necessary to the over understanding of the role of Atlanta and the main character Mayor Calhoun. I enjoyed this book.
