Loved the singleminded dedication of Spot, and how people’s perceptions made such a great story. Can’t wait to hear the next installment!

After some unsettling news brought to them by an unexpected messenger, Prince Edgar fled the Raid Dungeon to hurry back to his kingdom, leaving Derek as the impromptu leader. Being concerned about his people on the outside, Derek chose to rule with an iron fist to finish the dungeon as soon as possible. This choice didn’t make him any friends, but he didn’t need any for it to work.

Was Naively Hopeful...
Revisado: 06-23-24
Mostly, the story felt like a lot of filler - not much really happened except the MC flexing on armies early in the book while seemingly completely bored and full of himself. His ego is just a tad on the 'colossal' end of the spectrum, and his overbearing arrogance and flippant disregard for anyone but himself don't make the listen any better. I was kinda hoping he'd get his butt kicked when he keeps imposing his questionable morals/values on a completely alien species. The whole listen was forgettable and I returned it halfway through.

Didn’t Get Better
Revisado: 05-16-24
The story still has a lot of potential, but I couldn’t get past my dislike of the MC - obnoxious and self absorbed twerp is the best I can say about him. The author’s intent of MC inner dialogue did not transfer well to the audience and it was read in the same manner of an outside voice.
Could not be convinced that it would improve as the story progressed and returned the book after the “party” reached level 2 in the dungeon.

Nothing to Like
Revisado: 03-13-23
This was just awful. I really tried to find something about this book to like… I really did.
The editing to a final, released product is not apparent. Numerous dialogue repeats in almost every chapter, changes in tone and volume from one sentence to another… there doesn’t seem to be any effort made to turn out a quality audio book.
The characters were annoying. There was really nothing to engage me - nothing redeeming in a single encounter. I am not sure what the author was shooting for, but if it was to get me to root for every MC to die a horrible death, then he hit his mark! Everyone was plastic-feeling and overwhelmingly dysfunctional as individuals, but especially as a group. And they didn’t care! The storyline didn’t make any discernible effort to draw me in; make anything relatable as a listener. The banter between them was just… I can’t describe how uncomfortable it was to suffer through.
I returned the title almost two-thirds in. I cannot recommend this book. There is just nothing to like.

Historia
How do you run a clean ship? His Majesty’s auxiliary ship Sparkle—the navy’s laundry ship—is home to the rejects of the fleet. Midshipwoman Ophelia Branford is assigned there for her “middie” voyage. She is assigned to the ship commanded by her sister—Captain Owami Branford—which should never happen. Something is wrong. And it only gets worse when Ophelia decides to help make the cleaning quicker. What seemed like a good idea now threatens the very existence of their star kingdom...perhaps even mankind.

Shallow, Cannot Connect
Revisado: 10-13-22
If you are expecting a military SF, this book is not it. The whole premise of a military feels like an afterthought, its structure or even its operation is about one layer deep and confusing as hell. The story is not at all engaging and the characters are about as far from relatable as one can get. Not a single one of them generated positive vibes that they somehow had a place in the story. Plastic.
The narrator’s pacing is monotonous and typically does not fit the story being read. Everything is one speed, one emotion. So annoying.
The book is just - bad.

Historia
The Romans have abandoned Britannia. It is now 425 CE, and the islands have been brutally invaded by barbarian tribes coming from all directions. These lands are now a series of lawless, squabbling kingdoms that haven’t been united since the death of High King Coel Hen roughly a decade before. Roman rule failed the Britons, and a former Roman auxiliary, Hall, has been asked to return and provide a safer future for the people of Britannia’s northmost kingdom, Ebrauc. Word has it that a Saxon warlord has united many tribesmen from Germania and Gaul.

For nearly one thousand years, the Core Empire has held together thousands of star systems and billions of citizens. But a coup attempt has broken the empire into pieces. Some planets and systems have survived and still have law and order. Others have fallen to barbarism and piracy. For young Hugh Cascade, this is but a history lesson, even if the nightmares of kinetic weapons exploding have followed him through most of his childhood. Ten years later, the war finds Hugh, now a military cadet.

Stuck in Neutral...
Revisado: 04-23-22
So yeah... It is mostly a book for young adults: Hidden lost prince who suddenly realizes his fate that has been hidden all this time, and how he must rely on the sage advice from older, wiser adults... the tropes go on.
And that is not a bad thing if you are new to the genre. Or if you are 12. I guess I thought it would be more.
I found myself angry on the MCs behalf for being lied to all his life and essentially playing a marionette to those very same wise and sage adults who know what is best for him. Just annoying. And as a former military man myself, I find it almost painful to hear the stereotypes on display. The story doesn't seem to go anywhere, and the characters are shallow and entirely one dimensional. I keep waiting for the tale or plot to shift gears on me, but it seems to be stuck in neutral.
Overall, it is fantasy, and I can suspend belief and listen to the story. I just didn't enjoy doing so.

One Dimensional Character
Revisado: 04-13-22
On the whole, I find the protagonist, Kairos, thoroughly uninspired, shallow and predictable in his selfishness. His colossal ego is eclipsed only by his titanic arrogance. Kairos is just aggravating and I quit the book after a battle scene where he is so upset and confused when a mother defends her child almost to the death. He calls it barbaric that she would not listen to reason and rather die than be captured, when his forces killed half the town’s men, women and children… even complaining that he is deafened from the screams of people he just had immolated during her kidnapping.
Kairos is 18, and like most self-absorbed teenagers, he believes that there is nothing you can say, teach, or show, because he already knows everything.
The entire cast of characters is one-dimensional and lacking in growth, but Kairos somehow manages to get under your skin at the same time.

Don’t Bother
Revisado: 10-03-21
The storytelling is disjointed and confusing. The comedic asides are not funny and take away from the tiny-bit of actual story. It is annoying. So far, every attempt at a back-story is nothing more than an internal schizophrenic ramble that is so full of snark that whatever context the author is trying to convey is lost. Maybe that is intentional? I don’t know and I no longer care. Seriously… did Deadpool write this? I’m trying really hard to give this book a shot, but four chapters in is my limit.

Frustrating
Revisado: 09-12-21
Maybe I should go back and listen to the first book? I don’t remember Magnus being such a one dimensional character… or such a moron. And Nina… what is she to the story, besides an annoying, self-absorbed pest? Her character’s actions are distracting and petulant and I cannot fathom why she is included.
Disappointing. Could not finish. Cannot recommend.
