Historia
Eudora Honeysett is done with this noisy, moronic world - all of it. She has witnessed the indignities and suffering of old age and has lived a full life. At 85, she isn’t going to leave things to chance. Her end will be on her terms. With one call to a clinic in Switzerland, a plan is set in motion. Then she meets 10-year-old Rose Trewidney, a whirling, pint-sized rainbow of sparkling cheer. All Eudora wants is to be left alone to set her affairs in order.

Narrator was spot on. Plot was very similar to Ove’, but refreshing nonetheless. A charming exploration of life choices and end of life issues. Well worth a listen.

A Joy. To Hear
Revisado: 11-14-23
This is a delightful listen. The narration is wonderful to hear, and the Irish brogue suits the book perfectly, although it is a little difficult for me. to understand, but I speak broken Southern US English so who am I to talk. Reminds me a lot of Frank McCourt’s books and I loved Frank and Malachy

A long wonderful ride
Revisado: 10-05-23
I listened to David Copperfield because it inspired. Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead which I had just finished and loved. I enjoyed both books and while I could definitely see the parallels, both stand alone as wonderful books. . DC is a very long listen, but I enjoyed the ride. The narration was wonderful and added to my willingness to stick with it to the end

I enjoyed this book so much I plan to buy it and read it slowly and carefully as I feel I have only begun to grasp its meaning and significance much less understanding. And I failed to mention it is an exciting adventure also. Unlike anything I normally listen to but highly recommended. Be willing to suspend your disbelief !

Historia
Reverend Willie Maxwell was a rural preacher accused of murdering five of his family members for insurance money in the 1970s. With the help of a savvy lawyer, he escaped justice for years until a relative shot him dead at the funeral of his last victim. Despite hundreds of witnesses, Maxwell's murderer was acquitted—thanks to the same attorney who had previously defended the reverend. Casey Cep brings this story to life, from the shocking murders to the courtroom drama to the racial politics of the Deep South.

Two books in one- Both are excellent
Revisado: 11-05-19
This book is a great listen. The first two thirds or so is the fascinating true story of a series of strange deaths in the same family- all ruled accidental, but all resulting in large life insurance payouts for one family member, the Reverend Maxwell. Finally the Reverend Maxwell is murdered by another family member. This part of the book ends with a courtroom drama as the murderer faces justice. The final third or so of the book is a biography of Harper Lee that is equally fascinating.

Historia
Norman Mailer's Pulitzer Prize-winning and unforgettable classic about convicted killer Gary Gilmore now in audio. Arguably the greatest book from America's most heroically ambitious writer, The Executioner's Song follows the short, blighted life of Gary Gilmore who became famous after he robbed two men in 1976 and killed them in cold blood. After being tried and convicted, he immediately insisted on being executed for his crime. To do so, he fought a system that seemed intent on keeping him alive long after it had sentenced him to death.

The stark grief of a brother mourning a brother opens this novel with a stunning, unforgettable experience. Here, in a monumental saga of love and rage, Baldwin goes back to Harlem, to the church of his groundbreaking novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, to the homosexual passion of Giovanni's Room, and to the political fire that inflames his nonfiction work.

A Compelling Chronicle of the Black Experience
Revisado: 02-20-19
I chose this book after seeing the movie, If Beale Street Could Talk. I had never read James Baldwin, I am sorry to say. This book popped up and I’m so glad I selected it. It is an account of the black experience set in Harlem during the 50s and 60s, with forays into the Deep South in the beginnings of the civil rights movement. It is beautifully written. Be warned, however, that it graphically and realistically portrays the sexual experience. I have no problem with this but some might. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Living in the Woods in a Tree is an intimate glimpse into the turbulent life of Texas music legend Blaze Foley (1949-1989), seen through the eyes of Sybil Rosen, the woman for whom he wrote his most widely known song, "If I Could Only Fly". It captures the exuberance of their fleeting idyll in a tree house in the Georgia woods during the countercultural 1970s. Rosen offers a firsthand witnessing of Foley's transformation from a reticent hippie musician to the enigmatic singer/songwriter who would live and die outside society's rules.
