Historia
"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

Cannot take the whining
Revisado: 10-23-21
If it were just Craig Wasson alone narrating these stories I would have given the performance a million stars but the female narrator is so whiny it drops my score. Anytime she read a character’s thoughts it sounded as if they’d been whacked on the head and were in a daze in ADDITION to the whine. If the stories hasn’t been so good I would have skipped past her sections. I found myself continually yelling at the speaker for her to speak in a normal tone.

Revisado: 07-01-20
A combination of the story and the narrator’s talent kept me listening through car rides, laundry folding and getting ready in the morning. It’s always nice when your credit goes to a good book.

Historia
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Just waited...
Revisado: 12-18-18
I kept waiting for this awful character to redeem herself but she just got worse. The connection the narrator made to 9/11 was weak and in a sense disrespectful. Overall a lousy story with a completely unsatisfactory ending.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Needed an editor badly!
Revisado: 11-01-18
Her writing was beautiful. Be prepared to be frustrated at the main character and sad for him at the same time. Man, it needed some serious editing, way too much internal dialogue. A few times while listening I actual said out loud, “hurry up already!”

Where’s the German accent?
Revisado: 06-30-18
The story was cute, but impossible to enjoy fully with the lack of correct accent for the German characters. If the narrator can’t to an accent then just skip it, don’t pretend they are English and just deepen your voice.

Is this narrator meant to be a joke?
Revisado: 05-29-14
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I can honestly say I've never been turned off from an audio book by the narrator choice. In this instance I could barely get past the first few chapters. The novel's content is brutal and raw, not meant to be read by someone who should be selling items on the home shopping network. The combination just didn't work and thus, the story suffered.

Reads like a Medieval Soap Opera
Revisado: 04-23-13
The idea was interesting and I like the ties to Queen Emma's true history. However, it's a bit shallow and at times I felt like I was plodding along just trying to find out what happens in the end. I'm hooked enough to complete the trilogy, but wouldn't rank it among my favorites.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Any additional comments?
I suppose if you constantly read the sci-fi genre this book could be considered predictable. However as a newcomer or occasional dabbler in the sci-fi game it keeps the reader on seat’s edge. I agree that the character development was lengthy, but worth it as you grow to care about the whole cast once the action begins. The mystery unfolded like your backyard woods did as a child. It was a fun read, had to stay up late to finish because I was so invested in the outcome.

Historia
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

It's the kind of novel that stays with you.
Revisado: 03-14-13
What did you love best about Dark Places?
Gillian Flynn has such an attention to detail, as you read you pick up small similarities between the family members, the must subtle character traits.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes! The overarching mystery of who done it twisted along, and you just knew the pieces would not come together until the very end.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
I enjoyed all the performances with the exception of Ben Day's narrator, his reading was a bit flat.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both. At times it left me hollow, other times it filled me up.
