I loved his story -- inspirational, a poor boy working up to living his dreams, while holding on to things he cherished in boyhood.

I loved the management aspects of this book (his 14 points, his self management; and I loved relaying to my wife how he realized (through an interaction with his wife, a story relayed in this book) that he was more abrasive than he had thought.

This book yielded fascinting perspectives on the aerospace, and defense industry(s). It filled in much of the gaps in my knowledge, from back when I watched the Discovery channel, as a kid.

I feel that this is a must read for anyone who likes to work in small teams.

This book is talks about not just the history of stealth airplanes, but of the management of the teams that built them (albeit focussed on one group), as well.

I don't have the expertise to know if the lessons can be applied very easily, but I somehow feel that there is a lot to learn from this book -- so, take my conjecture with a grain of salt.

Great chronicling of the author's journey

I liked how the author chronicled his physical journey, and dropped nuggets from forays into his mental/head space.

It's sobering, rather than being too upbeat, and it fulfilled my wanting a book that takes me on a journey, and makes me think.

I liked how listening to the introspections in this prompted me to ponder on my own life. The bit about goals reminded me of how one Apollo astronaut I once met (loosely speaking) talked about the struggles after having achieved a goal. I liked being able to consider my own intentions (not necessarily about hiking, or being kn the mountains) through the lens of the author's thinking -- through this, I did derive some satisfaction out of learning about my own motivations. This book sometimes feels more philosophical than anything else, but it fails to be didactically so, which is delightful. I gave this book a try because it was appreciated by Reinhold Messner. Now, I'd like to read more such works.

I loved the prose. Listen to the end for his distilled life lessons. The journey will be worth it.

Struggles are described in a manner that makes the listener feel that they were there.

I had put off getting to this book (back when I saw it in a store) for years, because I felt that I had had enough trauma (no, nothing like the author's) in my own life, but in retrospect, I perhaps should have picked up the book back then.

I would also suggest the authors' Second Everest, which is a later book, but which I picked up first.

I am tempted to get these books for my personal library, so I can leaf through to parts that interest me the most at any given time.

I liked how the author weaved a coherent message about how he chooses to navigate through life, and how his quests intertwine with others integral to him, like family and friends. I like how he leaves commentary about the world that we live in, and I like how he talks about that next adventure.

Very informative. A treasure trove of information about a curiosity of mine. It helps bring a lot of contemporary America into perspective.

A lot of lessons to take away, for many walks of life. I might want to get a version that I can highlight and place on my bookshelf.

The narration was great, for me. I'll want to listen to other audiobooks read by the same reader.

This was a fascinating, and insightful look at the expedition, as well as those that came before it. I have followed the development of Mars missions, on and off, ever since the Sojourner mission (starting with the 7 minutes of terror), and I long wondered what exactly the NASA scientists were doing in the seemingly long gaps between major updates to the developments. Later, my own jibs gave me insight as to why things might look slow to an outsider. This exposition really seems to paint a vivid picture (for an outsoder), showing what was going on. It's also amazing how these missions are run Apollo style, in that things are run out of mission control, rather than off of too many independent systems on the rovers -- so I can imagine a day when NASA's scientists make these probes more independent than they are today, able to navigate and take samples on their own, prompting people who have never bothered to look up how things are actually done to simply claim that all prrvious Mars missions were hoaxes. Books like this one, at that time, will aid anyone who actually wishes to know.
