unexpected twists and a thrilling ending!
Revisado: 02-19-22
While the unfolding speed of this mystery (and its entire trilogy) seems inhuman, the emotional intensity captured me, restored the humanity of Kett and kept me intrigued until the final scene. The author has included three little girls all along, depicting the reality of chaos and laughter that goes along with parenting little ones, diminishing the horror of the crime scenes. Good triumphs over evil, a reminder that we all echo that movement!

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Engaging narrative with fascinating social history
Revisado: 03-30-21
As with Follett's Pillars of the Earth, World Without End did not disappoint. Protagonists are rich and complex, especially our 14th century architect, Merthin, who patiently explains space, materials and vision, and Caris, who stitches together a religious life, a doctoring spirit and free thinking all at once. While the novel highlights the treachery of the age and agonizing injustices and wasteful wars, the human spirit evolves despite many villains and obstacles. It is a little unbelievable that the plague did not ravage our two protagonists, but their sorrow along the way increased my empathy for their plight.

Historia
Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Tracing a Genre; Exploring a Universe
Revisado: 01-17-18
Would you listen to Great Utopian and Dystopian Works of Literature again? Why?
I would listen to this again because Professor Bedore's discussions are knowledgeable, humorous, thought-provoking. Also, she references many science fiction works that are not part of her detailed discussions, highlighting many authors.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
She asks questions about why utopias and dystopias change over time, helping us to consider historical, cultural and aesthetic dimensions. Some of her questions led me to consider other genres such as historical fiction or modern drama and those societal factors that brought them to our attention.
What about Professor Pamela Bedore’s performance did you like?
She provides insights and yet leaves much unanswered, creating curiosity for the listener. I have already ordered and read a few texts that she mentioned because I became very interested in her critique and her "I will leave this for you to discover" remarks.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. These chapters are entertaining yet dense. I listened to 2 or 3 chapters at a sitting.
Any additional comments?
Professor Bedore shares her own excitement about some works and has the breadth to reference Shakespeare or Faulkner as she delves into science fiction tropes and dimensions. She covers traditional literary standards and investigates feminism, marxism and even television adaptations to illumine our understanding of science fiction's reach.
I found she was balanced and self-deprecating, a sensitive and insightful teacher.
