Influence: Science and Practice is an examination of the psychology of compliance (i.e. uncovering which factors cause a person to say "yes" to another's request). Written in a narrative style combined with scholarly research, Cialdini combines evidence from experimental work with the techniques and strategies he gathered while working as a salesperson, fundraiser, advertiser, and in other positions inside organizations that commonly use compliance tactics to get us to say "yes".

Fascinating and wide-ranging
Revisado: 08-20-20
Dr. Cialdini has presented a comprehensive study of the way in which we are so often influenced to act in ways that are against our own self-interest.
His multiple illustrations of each concept make his point easy to grasp and virtually irrefutable.
Sales people should read/listen to this book so they can learn to sell with integrity. People being sold to need this book to fend off unscrupulous sellers. All can use this book to learn more about the human condition.
It is a long listen but well worth the time put in and fully worth 5 stars.

Business is more than numbers
Revisado: 08-31-19
A fascinating book to listen to. I thought I bought it for business purposes but it was much more About orienting your life. It was poignant to listen to the introduction to the book by the author himself with his voice diminished by illness. The reader of the rest of the book was the best I’d heard so far. Highly recommended.

Out of date and poorly read
Revisado: 07-27-19
Very disappointed. The author is highly regarded in his field; I guess I should have picked a more recent publication. Much worse, however, was the flat uninflected presentation. If he was told to come across as “matter-of-fact,” I suppose he succeeded, but there was very little in either content or performance that attracted me to it. I gave up with two hours remaining.

Latest edition of a must-read (listen) classic
Revisado: 06-29-19
I’ve hear about this book for years but finally got around to it now. If you are new or newer to investing AND you are a US resident, I recommend this without reservation. If you are, like I am, a Canadian, or a resident of another country, I still recommend it very highly but you will need to supplement it by reading about account types (tax-deferred or tax-free accounts for education, retirement, etc.) that are specific to your country. Malkiel’s advice ranges from broad observations about the nature of the markets all the way to a recommendation of particular index mutual funds and ETFs to build a portfolio.
Finally, I think the reader chosen for this book was perfect. He sounds somewhat elderly in keeping with Malkiel’s venerable status, but even better, he made nary a mistake in pronunciation throughout his reading. His voice added to sense that one was hearing the distilled wisdom of decades of research and direct involvement in the investment industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, one in nine Americans works in sales. Every day more than 15 million people earn their keep by persuading someone else to make a purchase. But dig deeper and a startling truth emerges: Yes, one in nine Americans works in sales. But so do the other eight. Whether we’re employees pitching colleagues on a new idea, entrepreneurs enticing funders to invest, or parents and teachers cajoling children to study, we spend our days trying to move others.

Thought-provoking Perspective on Selling
Revisado: 05-25-19
I’ve heard Daniel Pink several times on NPR’s Hidden Brain. He has an excellent resonant voice. As someone who is allergic to sales this book gave me a new perspective on the topic. It fell just a bit short in holding my attention, though. Once again, I think a hard copy book on which I can write notes would probably be the better medium, but I’m glad I listened to it.

How does money figure into a happy life? In The Geometry of Wealth, behavioral finance expert Brian Portnoy delivers an inspired answer based on the idea that wealth, truly defined, is funded contentment. It is the ability to underwrite a meaningful life. This stands in stark contrast to angling to become rich, which is usually an unsatisfying treadmill.

Important information
Revisado: 04-01-19
This is important information for investors; the behavioural investing element was especially valuable. What I didn’t like was the performance of the narrator. While his voice had a pleasant resonance, he mispronounced words that he really should know.

Good content. Great reader.

I liked the content of this book, but I’m not sure that an audible edition is better than a physical book that one can annotate.
