The President is Missing, but Bill Cinton is in Da
Revisado: 08-06-18
So, the story was involving in places, but I have to admit, it devolved into "preachy" a little too often to suit me. Yes the President, a real one anyway, has a terrible burden to bear. That's why they all turn gray in office! But detailing the limits of the President's power in key places took away from moving the story forward. As for the reader, I have always loved Dennis Quaid and the reading part of this is good, but his voice has gotten rough over the years! The story was almost growled at listeners. Even so, for a summer distraction, it could be a good choice.

Just not engaging
Revisado: 09-01-15
Would you try another book from Michael Koryta and/or Robert Petkoff?
Narrator was very good and I've read other Michael Koryta books..."For Those Who Wish Me Dead" was a can't-put-it-down piece. This just wasn't for me.
If you’ve listened to books by Michael Koryta before, how does this one compare?
Wish Me Dead was a gripping thriller. This just felt frustrating. Some surprises, but definitely a lot more low key.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
He did a great job
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably not. Story just didn't grab me.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Putting the Science back into Science Fiction
Revisado: 04-05-15
What made the experience of listening to The Martian the most enjoyable?
The pace was really good, the first person account was really the only way to go with this which made it immediate. The narration was superb and it was just a good, science fiction story.
What did you like best about this story?
The way the main character became the Macgyver of space.
What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?
He gave life to all the characters. As a default I like a single reader doing all the characters, not an ensemble. He's obviously not a reader personally, mispronouncing a number of words, but still, excellent.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
When the going gets tough, the tough break out the duct tape.
Any additional comments?
Even if you are not a "science" person, you can appreciate the writing and the narration of this book. A good story that ended well.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
Not about the narrative it was very good and very interesting
What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?
The readers were not actors, they were an ensemble of readers. Very disappointing. I'm not crazy about multiple readers... I like one actor doing all the parts, but here these readers just read, they do not perform.
Could you see Lone Wolf being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
yes

Historia
Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting - a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum - in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire's studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

Great story, Perfect narration
Revisado: 10-19-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this to anyone. I listen while I work out and this excellent book proved to be a great motivator
What other book might you compare The Art Forger to and why?
The Geographer. A wonderful combination of detailed (but not boring) technical information and superb storytelling.
Which character – as performed by Xe Sands – was your favorite?
Clearly the protagonist Claire, but the narrator did a great job with all characters.... across genders. I prefer a single talented narrator to audio "theater" with many voices.
Who was the most memorable character of The Art Forger and why?
They were all multidimensional. Claire's logical pursuit of a "real" mystery was very intriguing. And, the complication of her personal backstory and relationships were perfect.
Any additional comments?
This is a good book. You don't need to care about art. You don't need to care about mysteries, though this is both. It's just a good story, well done.

Historia
Richard's cousin is missing, and his best hope of finding her rests with the wily, one-eyed, ex-governor of Florida. Carl Hiaasen introduces his iconic character Skink to a younger audience in this nail-biting adventure! Classic Malley: Her parents are about to ship her off to boarding school, so she takes off with some guy she met online...Poor Richard: He's less of a rebel than Malley, and a lot less trusting. He knows his cousin is in trouble before she does. Wild Skink: He's a ragged, one-eyed, ex-governor of Florida, and enough of a renegade to think he can track Malley down.

Carl Hiaasen is not well served by this narrator
Revisado: 10-11-14
Would you try another book from Carl Hiaasen and/or Kirby Heyborne?
I love Carl Hiaasen, but no on this narrator. It seemed as if it was his first book. The reading was flat and lifeless. I was past ready for it to end.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Skink - No Surrender?
Lots of good scenes.... jumping out of the turtle nest... rescuing the baby skunk....on the boat....
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kirby Heyborne?
There are lots of excellent choices. Look at Rip Off.... plenty of good narrators. Maybe it wasn't his first book, maybe the book wasn't right for him.
Do you think Skink - No Surrender needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Anything Hiassen is great.

Historia
What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children.

Wanting to be wowed
Revisado: 08-15-14
What would have made The Leftovers better?
A real story would have made this better. Unfortunately I stayed with it hoping something would happen. Heard an NPR interview with the author as the HBO series was going to launch. As one reviewer said, HBO has a pretty low bar to hit.
What was most disappointing about Tom Perrotta’s story?
It was a great idea executed through the mundane, lame personalities of the characters. As a result, there was no overriding communication, no big realization. No real tension. it's like a PBS show about growing old: you don't get nicer or meaner as you get older, you just get more of what you were before. These characters were lame before the "event" and they remain lame after. I actually tried to get through the final two hours by putting in an earbud and "listening" in the background. Now I wish I had quite.
What about Dennis Boutsikaris’s performance did you like?
He did very well with poor material.
What character would you cut from The Leftovers?
Very hard to choose. I didn't feel connected to any of them.
Any additional comments?
No one sets out to make a bad movie or write a bad piece. This was just not for me. I like my fiction with a purpose. In graduate school, talking about "the narrative turn" one noted professor said, "We look for change in the writer from beginning to end." These characters did not change. As a result, we shared their mundaneness in an extraordinary time.

What did you like best about Truth in Advertising? What did you like least?
I am certain the the PR firm responsible for this book deserves a promotion. Without the excellent reader, I might have just bailed on the book.
What was most disappointing about John Kenney’s story?
The slowness of his self actualization.
Which scene was your favorite?
When his boss gave him a second chance.
Did Truth in Advertising inspire you to do anything?
No.

I smell a good book!
Revisado: 02-21-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
In the Scent of Scandal, Craig Pittman perfectly balances the craziness of Florida (damn those transplants) the zealotry of protecting and promoting the image of cash soaked and starved nonprofits and those who love and support them and their causes and a little science, just to move the story along.Craig is a great storyteller. His understanding and love (as only a native can) appreciation of all that is Florida and what it does to people coupled with his knowledge of the environmental sector and their unique narrow-mindedness helps explain how this kind of thing could happen and how it shouldn't. Craig makes no judgements which helps keep the story in context and at the same time lets the participants "explain" themselves in their own words, but does not absolve them of responsibility for their actions. The story moves along in an efficient way, no "flowery" language not curtailing the narrative. This is a good book about people getting caught up in their own nonsense, about reaching for greed or fame and about the enforcement of rules and regulations that are sometimes focused on the wrong things.I hope his next book is about pythons.

Good Book, Poor Narration
Revisado: 01-31-10
The book is interesting and well-written. I've recommended it to friends who are interested in communication and politics...but that narrator REEKS. Unlike a previous reviewer, I did not find him arrogant, rather I found him consistently LAME. His wimpy style did not work in this piece and he does the writer a disservice.
