I wasn’t sure how I felt when I started reading and found out jt was a prequel. But wow. I loved this just as much as Legends and Lattes. More please!

This was highly entertaining and I finished in a couple days. Loved the audiobook. She had me laughing within minutes of starting the audiobook. (Spanx!)

Rich girl meets small town boy. Two families rooted in their own history and legacy. The tiniest hint of fantastical element that made the love story adorably adorable in places. I think Daniel and Alexis might be my new favorite Jimenez couple. Their growth and journey made me ACHE in places.

Doug stole every scene he was in and he and Bree better get the next book. *cough* ring light *cough*

I loved listening to this audiobook! It felt like Treasure Planet meets Anastasia meets iRobot. Loved all of it. Went to listen to book 2 and it’s out but no audiobook? Why!?

My expectation sitting down to write this review: “I’m going to write a fun and comprehensive review.”

What actually happened: Gushing… lots and lots of gushing. #fangirl

OMG I cannot get over this book! It is a must-LISTEN. (The Full Cast Audio Recording) I don’t think I would have connected so deeply to the story reading it traditionally due to the unorthodox format. Usually when I listen to audiobooks I only listen to them in short bursts on my commute, during lunch or while doing household chores. But this one? I couldn’t get through it fast enough!

Every second of this audiobook was unexpected, masterfully casted and well written. A welcome rollercoaster of twists, turns and emotions. #allthefeels

There’s an invasion by a big bad corporation, which led to a military battleship on a covert exercise coming to a desperate planet’s aid, fighting the baddies long enough for shuttles and two science vessels to rescue survivors…

…but that’s just the science fiction backdrop to an epic tale of love, loss, romance, friendship, struggle, growth, hope, defeat, the human condition and what it means to live.

The characters that steal the show are Kady and Aidan.

I love Kady, she is all fire and snark and amazing courage. She’s also naively arrogant, brilliant and has a bit of an ego. I’d hate to be on the other side of her keyboard. She figures out something is amiss and starts hacking her way to answers. Kicking some major butt and becoming the embodiment of bravery and selflessness along the way.

AIDAN!!!!! (More gushing) Is he maniacal? Is he merciful? I don’t know but I love him all the same. By far, he has the most character development in the story. He gave me chills, made me question my morality, caused me to marvle at his brilliance and then grow to love him. Is this some kind of Helsinki Syndrome? Again, I have no clue, and I really don’t care. Once you listen to this story, you will understand exactly where I am coming from, even if you don’t agree.

Then there is Ezra… romantic, heroic Ezra. The kind of boy/man I could fall in love with too.  “You have me until the last star in the galaxy dies.”

This book is now among my favorites, with recent loss felt in my own life I found the losses the characters went through very poignant and I could relate to their thoughts and emotions. It all felt real, which made me feel it all the deeper. There is some healing in that, not much, but some.

I will continue to gush about this book if given the chance, and will recommend it to people with certain warnings.

YOUNG READERS
In the midst of all this gushing, I must give WARNING! The type of content I read in books categorized as YA these days continues to shock me. It has been over a decade since I was a teenager… and I never read anything like this back in the day. There are very intense scenarios, descriptions of gore and other horrible things in small sections of the book. (That are necessary for the story.) Swearing is censored but you can still tell what there saying with little difficulty.  This doesn’t bother me, but I don’t feel comfortable recommending this to my younger friends and relatives as a good read. I have never thought of myself as prudish either, but some of the dialogue between the military personal made ME blush.

I have purchased a hard copy of the second book in this series (Gemina) but I haven’t tried reading it yet. I am curious if it will feel the same, and now as I finish my fangirling, I wonder if I will even try or just get the next Audiobook.
