A little bit slow at first, but it was good

For starters, I wanted to like the voice actor, but the accents and the timing of their incorporations were rather confusing. I sometimes did not know if someone was speaking or thinking, or who was speaking or thinking. Someone else had a spot on review of the characters voices—Cora was unlikeable at first, Paige was too monotone, but the two unlikeable men were done well.
As for the story, it was super slow for a LONG time. If I had read it as a physical book, I would not have finished. I wanted to quit listening, but I was too intent on finding out what would become of Georgia (and Avery). By the end, it felt a bit gimicky, whereas at the start it felt like a thriller. The ending was fairly satisfying though. Its skipped a lot of the legal aspects that I'm sure got messy at some point.
I will say as an Oregon resident, the setting of the Oreon coast was nowhere near utilised. There was basically no setting at all— outside of a gated-suburban neighborhood with an arbitary town nearby. It might as well have just been "America," or nowhere at all. The Oregon coast is a beautiful place with luscious nooks and crannies BEGGING to be written about and it was just mishandled. No scenic descriptions, nothing that would set the "town" apart from anywhere else—not even a fake city name or anything. Nothing about the BEACH either, or the mountains, the fog, the seafood, nothing. The rain was utilised for dramatic effect near the very end, but that's really it. Actually, come to think about it, when there WAS a description of it getting colder from fall to winter (the description was mainly for plot), I would never have pictured the Oregon coast. Just saying. I was upset.
All in all, I would still say it was worth the read because when it got interesting, it was very interesting.

I love short stories so I was excited to find this. I liked the transitions into the podcast narratives. For me it wasn't really gimicky. I liked the story, and the twists had my heart racing! It was a fun read!

I loved the other book JoAnn Chaney wrote, "As Long As We Both Shall Live," so I thought to pick up this one. I liked her other book better than "What You Don't Know," but it was still good.
I don't know if everyone would notice this, but I kind of love that she puts some of her female characters in "morally gray" positions because it makes me think more about the complexities of feminism and female characters in books. It's very compelling, and I love that it challenges my thinking and accepting the occupants of that in-between space.
This book was quite a ride. I could feel the disgust, sadness and desperation that came from the characters perspectives with this read. It was complex and fortifying.
It is 100% worth the read/listen.
