Historia
Just six years old when my brother was snatched off the street, I grew up in the aftermath of tragedy. While other kids were happily playing in the sandbox, I was hiding under press conference podiums listening to my parents beg for Jake’s safe return. People ask if I’m screwed up after what happened, and I never know how to respond.

So worth it!
Revisado: 07-29-21
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Cake series is how the author explores the impact of a single tragic event on every member of a tight-knit average family. In particular, each character seems to be somewhat unaware of the experiences of everyone else. That’s so true of how we view our own tragedies—we find it hard to see beyond our own pain to that of those closest to us.
I have been looking forward to Quinn’s story, but the first hour or two I struggled. Quinn was kind of whiny and Jess’s job, which she loved, was, well, kind of predatory. I’m so glad I stuck it out because the characters grew quickly into people I admire. Quinn realized his potential as a hero & Jess revealed her strength and tenacity. The narrators, as always, are perfection.

Historia
Robert Clementyne is going on a transmogrification machine hunt. He fears finding the machine will be as difficult as pronouncing the name. How can the steam-powered device perform as advertised, and how useful can any information be, coming from a steampunk themed bowling alley/museum? It's pretty crazy, but he's been there, done that, and thinks he can handle it. And then he meets the proprietor/curator...Emily Babcock.

Worst narration ever!
Revisado: 04-26-15
Would you try another book from Pauline Baird Jones and/or Bill Brooks?
I've listened to several PBJ books, and mostly have enjoyed them all. I don't know if this one is good or not because the narration is so abysmal I can't follow the story. In particular, the female characterizations are dreadful. Mr. Brooks should spend some time with a drag queen learning not to speak in a higher register, but to soften his tone.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bill Brooks?
Anyone would have been better!

Historia
Doc - Delilah Oliver Clementyne's - orders are simple: Do the impossible and do it yesterday. A genius/bad ass, she does the impossible on a regular basis. But this time the impossible is complicated by an imminent war between the Earth expedition to the Garradian Galaxy and the Gadi, an encounter with some wife-hunting aliens, and not one but two bands of time travelers. The only way it could get worse? If the heart she didn't know she had starts beating for the wrong guy....

Decent book--Narration was meh.
Revisado: 04-16-15
What did you love best about Girl Gone Nova?
The plot was good--I didn't expect to like the characters much. Doc lacks warm and fuzzy, and Hel, well, he did kidnap Fyn. However, Doc turned out to have plenty of warm and fuzzy, and Hel is a perfect match for her.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrator was not terrible--but his Brooklyn showed quite a bit, and he didn't even attempt Doc's faintly British accent.

Historia
After a high-school football star dies in a late-night motorcycle collision with a wild pig, the boy's wealthy father comes up with a creative scheme to rid Blanco County of the feral pests: He tattoos the ear of one particular pig, then offers a $50,000 reward for anyone who shoots it. Game warden John Marlin is not pleased-chiefly because the bounty is likely to bring a wave of poachers and trespassers to the area. The tension rises even higher when the death of the local boy turns out to be more complicated than it originally appeared.

Read it but don't listen to this production
Revisado: 12-14-13
If you could sum up Hog Heaven in three words, what would they be?
Rehder's books are always a fun ride with his large cast of crazies who never fail to entertain. Hog Heaven is no different. I almost didn't download this book though because the narrator is new to the series, and I like my John Marlins to sound like John Marlin from Blanco Co., Texas. I'm not sure where this Marlin is from but it's not anywhere near Texas. There is very little distinction between Marlin, Phil, Red, Billy Don, Bobby Garza, Bill Tatum, or even Nicole...except for the chick from Russia. She didn't sound Russian, but she didn't sound Texan, either...nor did any of the others. Robert King Ross killed this book for me. I won't buy another that he voices.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Robert King Ross?
Bring back Johnathan Davis!

In a riveting debut thriller that has drawn comparisons to masters of the genre like Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, Brian Freeman weaves obsession, sex, and revenge into a story that grips the reader with vivid characters and shocking plot twists from the first minute to the last.

Not Bad
Revisado: 02-06-06
Freeman delivers a complex, twisted tale. It had a few problems -- namely the first three-quarters of the book were not all that interesting. The last quarter, however, was excellent and left me anxious for the next Stride installment. Freeman uses a plot device that I really hate: a character finds out a vital piece of information that the reader is not privy to until much later. Very frustrating.
This was my first book with this narrator. While I really like his voice, some of his vocal characterizations are really irritating. His Minnesota accents, especially for the female characters, are whiney and grating. However, his Serena Dial is very enjoyable.
In short, don't give up on this book. I think there are great things to come from this new author.
