Historia
In the late 17th century, two young Frenchmen, René Sel and Charles Duquet, arrive in New France. Bound to a feudal lord for three years in exchange for land, they become wood-cutters — barkskins. René suffers extraordinary hardship, oppressed by the forest he is charged with clearing. He is forced to marry a native woman and their descendants live trapped between two cultures. But Duquet runs away, becomes a fur trader, then sets up a timber business. Annie Proulx tells the stories of the descendants of Sel and Duquet over 300 years.

Unlikeable characters
Revisado: 07-25-24
I’ve loved Proulx’s books, but not this one. At chapter 20, I still cannot connect with a single character. Too many words for so little action. I have had to push myself to pick it up again each time. will not be continuing with it.

Really, really young adult level
Revisado: 05-14-22
I read another of the author's books that was enjoyable for adults as well as YA. This one, however, is purely for someone at the quite young adult level. In fact, it reads as though a very young (and somewhat immature at that) teen wrote it. After a few chapters where there was no sign of it going anywhere but down, I gave up.
I am sure there are young people who will love this book. If your gifting it, consider the maturity level of the teen. My kids were well beyond this level by fourteen.

Could have been a good book, but...
Revisado: 04-16-22
Way, way too long. Cutting off ten or fifteen hours would not have hurt this one but. The cut might have made the narration bearable for me. As it is, I was gritting my teeth whenever Sands came on. Her attempts at a a shaky "I'm really upset" voice grated on my nerves - and she used it constantly. She delivered some lines that should have been serious flippantly. I will grant that the dialog was sometimes weirdly bad. The male narrator was fine aside from a few unusual pronunciations that were jarring. The word absurd, for instance, was pronounced almost as two separate words, ab and surd with each receiving emphasis. That sort of thing takes me out of the story momentarily. Were I continuing to the next book, I would definitely need to read rather than listen.
While the story is overblown, it was a great basic idea for a book. The writing was often solid. Some aspects made sense and had decent dialogue. From the dialogue used for the young women, I was constantly wondering if the author actually knew any young women. The author rather bizarrely uses so many ass-related phrases that I started laughing when they came up. I don't think I have ever heard ass used in so many ways in a book , and I could only get through 50 chapters before bailing. This comes from a woman noted for her foul mouth.
I got this based on Stephen King's blurb. I usually avoid books with the new overload of other authors' praise having purchased some stinkers as a result of believing them. I am beginning to think these "reviewers" are being paid for their positive reviews.

Just what I needed - a relaxing, fun, different, well written book about a group of older ladies figuring out how to make this later part of their lives meaningful and fun. Would make a great movie.

Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

Great little story
Revisado: 01-03-22
Before buying this, I read a review in which someone seemed put out that this was not a romance novel. I seldom like romance novels and, in fact, diligently avoid them. So reviews indicated this was well written, funny, and not a romance. I snapped it up and was not disappointed. I will have to disagree on the romance, though. While there is no bodice-ripping or long, indepth passages describing sex, there are two romances. These romances proceed in a manner appropriate for the characters.
The book is very much a beach read - not gonna tax the brain or emotions. It is funny, charming, sad, and interesting by turn and well worth a read when you need some light reading. I will not be surprised to see this one made into a movie.

Unusual story, well written
Revisado: 12-05-21
I saw this book listed in someone's review for another book. That reviewer said this was one of Connelly's better books. It did not disappoint. Truly an adult fairytale that both enchants and horrifies which required great skill in narration. Crossley was more than up to the task here.

Historia
Daniel leads a rich life and considers himself to be a mostly lucky guy - despite the fact that he’s suffered from a debilitating disease since he was a small child, one that has left him unable to speak or to move without a wheelchair. Largely confined to his home, Daniel spends the hours he’s not online communicating with irate air travelers observing his neighborhood from his front porch. One young woman passes by so frequently that spotting her out the window has almost become part of his daily routine. Until the day he’s almost sure he sees her being kidnapped.

Great story and narration
Revisado: 12-04-21
Refreshingly different and, interestingly enough, quite informative about Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) . The mystery definitely takes a back seat to the life story, but I was okay with that. If you are looking for a true, solid mystery, this may not satisfy you.
This is a light, quick read on a heavy subject. It does a great job of reminding readers not to make assumptions about the capabilities of the disabled, to look beyond the disabilities, and get to know the person.
