Historia
Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt spent a year fighting as part of the underground resistance on the enemy-held world of Gereon. When he left, he promised that he would bring the forces of the Imperium to liberate Gereon's citizens from their oppressors. Now he has returned, a crusade army at his back, but he finds a world devastated by war and a people irrevocably damaged by the taint of Chaos. Now Gaunt must fight to save Gereon not only from the enemy, but from the Imperium itself.

This one is a real war story.
Revisado: 03-04-23
The tagline of our hobby ends with “…there is only war.” and while so many of the novels depict grimness, darkness, and war, this one is a proper gut punch. Like a real war story should be. Insane, heroic, sad, senseless, brave, heartbreaking, darkly humorous.
It felt like the violence was much more personal at times in this one. I’m a setting as brutal as 40k, making violence feel horrible and human is actually a pretty tall order, and that he accomplishes this - and made me actually wince a few times - is a testament to Abnett’s craft, and understanding of the human toll of wounds and war.
Lastly, and this is a comment on all of Abnett’s Gaunt’s series, but Chaos is rendered impeccably. It’s really challenging to render cosmic horror properly. I love how Abnett paints Chaos as not only inimical to the Imperium, but to ordered minds, to normal human cognition. He brings a deep vein of the eldritch to Chaos, without making it a creature-feature. His Chaos is insidious, alien, and deliciously inimical to humanity.
I’m sad that there aren’t any more of this series recorded right now, but part of me is glad. Not spending time in that universe for a bit feels a little like giving the Ghosts some R&R until the next one comes out.

Historia
Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn has spent his life stalking the darkest and most dangerous limits of the Imperium in pursuit of heresy and Chaos. But how long can a man walk that path without succumbing to the lure of the Warp? Is Eisenhorn still a champion of the Throne, or has he been seduced by the very evil that he hunts? Warhammer 40,000’s most beloved anti-hero finally returns in a stunning new novel that pits him against his oldest and most constant foe, and forces him to confront the true darkness of his own self.

A must for Eisenhorn fans.
Revisado: 12-07-22
To avoid spoilers, I can say why this one is a must-read for Eisenhorn fans - but it’s intensely clever in construction, pacing, and the characters are, as always with Abnett, masterfully brought to life. Toby Longworth does a phenomenal job with the performance. Don’t miss this one.
