Historia
San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.

San Francisco earthquake novel
Revisado: 09-11-24
This is a fantastic story of triumph and strong women, overcoming personal challenges and tragedies. Eventually discovering that love and friendships are what sustains each other through life.
This is not story individuals easily shocked or offended, as it does discuss same sex love and the very real history of women who were sold to brothels and as little more than chattel.
The author’s notes are wonderful and provide great references to learn more about the fascinating period and the women who challenged the traditional roles.
Check out the very real story of Alice Eastwood an amazing botanist.

Historia
Before she was a Saint she was a fine philosopher. Yet because she is a woman her contributions have been ignored. This book asks the question: "Did Edith Stein make any important contributions to the philosophy of phenomenology and, if so, what are the implications of them for us today?" It begins with a biography of Edith Stein up until the acceptance of her doctoral dissertation "On the Problem of Empathy" in August of 1916. It then examines the phenomenology of Edith Stein and, in new breakthrough research, makes a detailed argument for her contributions to twentieth century philosophy ...

Historia
Enjoy the first novels that brought the world two of Agatha Christies’ most enduring detectives: Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. The Murder at the Vicarage is the first Miss Marple mystery, one which tests all her powers of observation and deduction. In The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Captain Arthur Hastings, invalided in the Great War, is recuperating as a guest of John Cavendish at Styles Court, the "country-place" of John's autocratic old aunt, Emily Inglethorpe.

Agatha Christie is timeless
Revisado: 12-06-20
Agatha Christie’s writings are timeless and never fail to completely entertain.
Joan Hickson’s performance of Murder at the Vicarage sounds like Julie Child with a mouthful of marbles but Christie’s excellent prose still wins over the less than great performance. Hugh Fraser does a wonderful job with The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
