A Masterfully Woven Tale
Revisado: 09-06-23
No Spoilers:
If you haven't heard all the previous books in the series, now is the time (before listening to the ending) Sarah ties her stories together so well and the details great and small are all pulled through each and every one.
Sarah is just a brilliant author. Her stories live on the corner of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen with a dash of Arthur Conan Doyle thrown in. She does her research and these books reflect the authenticity of that work. These books are unique and intriguing. As I reached the end of each chapter I found myself saying: "No! I'm not ready to break from this story." And then in the same breath going: "Oh but I have been waiting to know what was going on with this (next chapter penny dreadful) short story within the story.
They (all of Sarah's Dread Penny books) are incredibly well done. This book really just tops the literary cake as it were with the best icing available. These characters are witty, passionate for their cause and are built on so many layers of depth they feel like real people.
A note on the narrator: It is so nice to have Justine back. She reads books 1,2,3,5 (and I believe the collection edition- which I look forward to listening to as well!). We were all so bummed that she did not read book 4 as her voice and amazing talent really just brings to life each and every character that leap off the page here in these books- honestly she is just the best. She maintains so many voices, accents, and a knowledge of each of the many characters to a point that at times it is easy to forget there is not a whole cast presenting the story. I was literally holding my breath as I checked multiple times over the course of the last several months in anticipation of this story to know if she would be narrating.
This author/narrator combination is sensational!

Historia
Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero - he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry. Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember.

Historia
I would do nearly anything to avoid the lecherous advances of an eager earl, including running away from my finishing school and finding employment under a false name. The work turned out to be harder than I expected, however, and the prospect of returning to a life of comfort and a significant reduction of welts on my hands and shadows beneath my eyes just might be a temptation I’m too weary to refuse. The problem? The invitation comes from Benedict, the ultimate tormentor of my youth and brief object of my infatuation—the latter of which he can never find out.
