Historia
Maverick thinker Nassim Nicholas Taleb had an illustrious career on Wall Street before turning his focus to his black swan theory. Not all swans are white, and not all events, no matter what the experts think, are predictable. Taleb shows that black swans, like 9/11, cannot be foreseen and have an immeasurable impact on the world.

Only the surface map of Extremistan
Revisado: 04-27-18
This book discusses only the surface map of Extremistan. That is, it points out that some domains of life have largest or smallest outcomes that are wildly different from the domain's middle range, and that we should be vigilant about detecting when we're in such a domain in order to aggressively pursue or avoid such extremes as they might affect us. But it doesn't provide any hints about how to detect such domains nor their extreme outcomes. Yet the author does do this in his life, as all of us do. How? By developing causal models of each domain. The author denigrates such models in general, and he should be more discerning about what makes a good one.

Historia
Over the past two centuries or so, capitalism has undergone profound changes - economic cycles that veer from boom to bust - from which it has always emerged transformed and strengthened. Surveying this turbulent history, Paul Mason's Postcapitalism argues that we are on the brink of a change so big and so profound that this time capitalism itself, the immensely complex system within which entire societies function, will mutate into something wholly new.

Better than a year of The Economist
Revisado: 04-20-18
The Economist is a wonderful source of insight about the past and coming few years. But if you're curious about the past and coming 500, this is the best source of insights I've found.

Historia
Whether it’s brusque, convincing, fraught with emotion, or dripping with innuendo, language is fundamentally a tool for conveying meaning - a uniquely human magic trick in which you vibrate your vocal cords to make your innermost thoughts pop up in someone else’s mind. You can use it to talk about all sorts of things - from your new labradoodle puppy to the expansive gardens at Versailles, from Roger Federer’s backhand to things that don’t exist at all, like flying pigs.

Language comprehension and perception
Revisado: 01-31-18
While there may be no 'royal road' to geometry, as Euler said, there is one for the study of how language comprehension depends on our ability to perceive, to act, and to imagine. This book has just guided me down it. Bergen is concise, engaging, and funny. Although "meaning" is often analyzed as intentionality or "meaning-as-usage," this book explores how our comprehensions may be constructed by leveraging our perceptual and motor capabilities. Recommended to anykne curious about theories of "embodiment" or mind-reading as "simulation".
