Insufferable audio mixing

Very loud sound effects and music. I cannot stand these "immersive" storytelling audiobooks. Becomes comical rather than spooky.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Not Great, never take online book recommendations
Revisado: 07-08-23
This book really answers the question, "if a piece of media can be so misogynistic it become homoerotic, can something be so homoerotic it's misogynistic?" and not even hesitate to answer yes.
I know people are going to argue that this is about Greek mythology and the Greeks were misogynistic but let's not forget that the author already took many other liberties with this book. You would think a love story between two men would not hurt women but they think so little of them that it actually degrades every female character. They're nothing but props for the male characters. Every act of brutality (and there is a lot) put upon them is for the male characters pain or triumph, any sliver of personality we get is only for the male characters to react to, to justify any action they do to the woman. Even an actual goddess gets reduced to nothing more than an angry, worried mother. Spoilers for the rest.
When the main character is killed, he explains that his body cannot pass on until it is burned, buried, and their name marked on a headstone. It is VERY important, to where we feel the pain of years of being stuck between the worlds of the living and dead, even begging Achilles mother to help him even though they hate each other because he cannot stand it. The author totally forgets the so-called "favorite" woman of the book was killed and sank into the sea, with no proper burial. No thought is put on if SHE is stuck between worlds, no begging for her soul to be put to rest. The only real comment we get is, "I hope her gods are merciful" when they see her die and that is the last thought of the girl. The most insulting end to someone who was the main characters confidant for years.

Set before and during the Great War, Birdsong captures the drama of that era on both a national and a personal scale. It is the story of Stephen, a young Englishman, who arrives in Amiens in 1910. His life goes through a series of traumatic experiences, from the clandestine love affair that tears apart the family with whom he lives to the unprecedented experience of the war itself.

Disjointed abridged
Revisado: 06-28-23
Did not know it was an abridged version until I finished and saw the reviews!! They need fo post that its unabridged! I spent my $15 credit on this garbage. I thought the chapters were random, especially with introducing a whole new modern plotline 2/3 of the way in. Now i know why. Why would ANYONE want an abridged book?? Waisted 6 hours of my life and now I have to find the full version somewhere else. I'm not even the biggest fan of this story but knowing there's pieces missing makes me feel like I'm not giving it a fair chance.

Performing plays? Scandalous! Insest? Totally fine
Revisado: 03-03-23
bu far my least favorite Jane Austen book. The entire premise is how good and just the main character is, so pure as to even reject performing a play she finds inappropriate, but has been in love with her cousin for 8 years.
Fanny is virtuous and never in want of anything, except when she goes home to her parents and feels that they are trash and would rather be mistreated by her aunts than ignored by her overworked parents.
Her cousin is a going to be a respected preacher and loves his cousin Fanny like a sister, his only sister by the end of the book.....and also a lover.
Now I've read plenty of other books where cousins are married, it's just part of old cultures and ignorance, but never has it been so spelled out as a relationship grounded as siblings, but "legal" enough to be romance. Just gave me the ick.

Historia
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Very good
Revisado: 10-27-22
Far too little Tim Curry I'm afraid, absolutely not enough to give him second billing, but the narrarration was all very good with the exception of Lucy. I don't know if she was trying to sound mysterious, but the breathy sound and cadence was very weird.
The full cast made it very easy to follow, when I first read this in high school I know I had a hard time rembering who was speaking. Would recommend to anyone.

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most prolific authors of his time, eventually gaining recognition for his tales of horror and his uncanny ability to paint a macabre picture with words. The Complete Works Collection of Edgar Allan Poe contains over 150 stories and poems, separated into individual chapters, including all of Poe's most notorious works such as The Raven, Annabel Lee, A Dream Within a Dream, Lenore, The Tell-Tale Heart, and many more.

Awful Narrator
Revisado: 10-03-22
Narrator has a odd cadence which is usually far too bouncy for the short stories. They seem to totally disregard punctuation, making it very difficult to understand starts, ends, and pauses in sentences. Each story feels like a run-on sentence.
And cadence aside, the narrator regularly mispronounced words, making it very difficult to understand meaning, especially in works that have purposely mispronounced words.
For one of the stories, the narrator puts on a frankly offensive Irish accent, which was not done for any other ethnicity in the collections entirety.
In terms of the collections organization, they end up repeating a story because it was released with 2 different titles. I also believe the order must have shifted while I was listening or there was a second duplicate story.
I unfortunately listened to the entirety, only because I did not want to spend money on another collection. Very disappointed. Can't tell if I dislike much of Poe's world or the narrator ruined any enjoyment.

Repetition = Poetry (it does not)
Revisado: 01-11-22
You could make a number of drinking games with this book on the repetition of certain words or phrases and all of them would be deadly. The book could be cut by a quarter if you just took out repeating phrases and descriptions of what something is not. I think it's meant to be poetic but it just comes off as tedious.
Also the main character lives 300 years and doesn't do anything but complain.

Historia
This 1872 sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland finds Carroll's inquisitive heroine in a fantastic land where everything is reversed. Whereas the first book has the deck of cards as a theme, this book is loosely based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for squares. Alice encounters talking flowers, madcap kings and queens, and strange mythological characters when she becomes a pawn in a bizarre chess game.

Bad Narrator
Revisado: 10-07-21
Couldn't stand the fake accents. Totally through off any enjoyment. I don't even know if I liked the story or not because I just couldn't focus on anything other than how bad and distracting the voices were. Why did most of the characters had a gritty stereotype New York accent? It sounds like they're trying for parody. I don't understand how this got approved. Totally unfit for the Alice stories.

Come with us to an Enchanted Place, a forest where Winnie-the-Pooh lived with Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, and Little Roo. The stories are about Christopher Robin and these good companions having wonderful times getting in and out of trouble. It is all very exciting and, really, quite thrilling no matter how young or old you may be. It is painful to try and imagine what the world would be like without them.

Oboes and Snorting
Revisado: 09-16-21
The stories are great classics, but between the too loud oboe solos between chapters and the snorting during every one of Piglet's lines, it became quite the headache. Just buy the physical book or a DVD. The original short videos made for Pooh do not stray at all from the text.
