Historia
In this masterful debut, Martin Clark proves to be the heir apparent of great Southern raconteurs and the envy of more seasoned novelists as he takes us on a frantic tour of the modern South. Hung over, beaten by the unforgiving sun, bitter at his estranged wife, and dreading the day's docket of petty criminal cases, Judge Evers Wheeling is in need of something on the morning he's accosted by Ruth Esther English.

Maybe it's just me, but this book is hilarious! One thing to know is that a lot the humor is obsolete, The narrator misprounces words here and there, but the only one I remember is Kanawha.

Historia
Midcentury Los Angeles: A city sold to the world as "the white spot of America", a land of sunshine and orange groves, Midwestern values, and Hollywood stars, protected by the world's most famous police force, the Dragnet-era LAPD. Behind this public image lies a hidden world of "pleasure girls" and crooked cops, ruthless newspaper tycoons, corrupt politicians, and East Coast gangsters on the make. Into this underworld came two men - one L.A.'s most notorious gangster, the other its most famous police chief - each prepared to battle the other for the soul of the city.

Historia
When a years-long case against a powerful mobster finally cracks and an unimpeachable witness takes the stand, federal prosecutor Nora Carleton is looking forward to putting the defendant away for good. The mobster, though, has other plans. As the witness's testimony concludes, a note is passed to the prosecution offering up information into the assassination of a disgraced former New York governor, murdered in his penthouse apartment just days before. It's enough to blow the case wide open, and to send Nora into a high-stakes investigation of conspiracy, corruption, and danger.

Historia
A literary icon sometimes seen as a bridge between the Beat Generation and the hippies, Ken Kesey scored an unexpected hit with his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His successful follow-up, Sometimes a Great Notion, was also transformed into a major motion picture, directed by and starring Paul Newman. Here, Oregon’s Stamper family does what it can to survive a bitter strike dividing their tiny logging community. And as tensions rise, delicate family bonds begin to fray and unravel.

Great story, hard to follow
Revisado: 01-31-22
I had to listen to it twice to begin to understand the first half of the story. I'm going to listen to it a third time, but that will have to wait. It will be worth it, though. The narrator was great, no fatigue there like I sometimes experience with long stories.

Questionable Veracity
Revisado: 07-11-21
I was disappointed and distracted by the reader's improper use of the word 'democrat' as an adjective throughout the book where the proper form is 'democratic'. I assumed that this was out of the reader's ignorance of proper usage or a failure of the editor to correct the author's grammatical errors. But the credits at the end identified the publisher as Regnery, so I concluded that this misuse was intentional, to convey contempt toward the Democratic Party and Democratic politicians, much the same as the right wing mouthpieces of a.m. radio have been doing for the last decade. This blatant display of bias, at best, calls into question everything else in the book, and made the whole experience of listening to it feel like a big waste of time.

Addy Hanlon has always been Beth Cassidy's best friend and trusted lieutenant. Beth calls the shots and Addy carries them out, a long-established order of things that has brought them to the pinnacle of their high-school careers. Now they're seniors who rule the intensely competitive cheer squad, feared and followed by the other girls - until the young new coach arrives. Cool and commanding, an emissary from the adult world just beyond their reach, Coach Colette French draws Addy and the other cheerleaders into her life. Only Beth remains outside Coach's golden circle.

Why?
Revisado: 01-02-21
Stephen King said he enjoyed this book in an interview on NPR. i listened to the whole damn thing waiting to find out what he was talking about, to no avail. What could possibly be any attraction about a bunch of mean, shallow girls in a rich suburban high school with no ambition in life other than to inflict misery and emotional abuse on each other? No character development, just flat, one-dimensional caricatures of pointlessly malevolent otherwise interchangeable generic stereotypically unpleasant stuck up girls. Has King gone around The Shining bend in quarantine???

Historia
It's 1928, and Berlin is a city on the edge of chaos, where nothing is truly verboten. At central police HQ, the Murder Commission has its hands full. A killer is on the loose, and though he scatters many clues, each is a dead end. It's almost as if he is taunting the cops. This is what Bernie Gunther finds on his first day with the Murder Commisson. He's been taken on because the people at the top have noticed him - they think he has the makings of a first-rate detective. But not just yet. Right now, he has to listen and learn.

The weird accents and tone of the voices made it hard to enjoy the story. Everything sounded like Cary Grant playing Prometheus reciting John Galt's speech, even what should have been quiet conversations.
