If it triggers you…
Revisado: 01-02-25
Maybe take a look the mirror. Yes a book can be fiction, entertaining and tell some very personal truths.
Good tension. No big twists. But. A few turns the reader may not see coming.
Entertaining.

Appreciation
Revisado: 11-28-24
I’ve always marveled at Ward’s skill in plot and character arcs, her inventive adversaries we love to hate for the BDB, and her ability to make us want to know what happens next.
Spoiler
I really liked the resolution for a human mate. And if you haven’t been waiting for-EVER for Lassiter’s book binge the fallen angel series (I hope we get to see more of that cast soon) it’s way under rated in Ward’s World.

And then….
Revisado: 08-30-24
We always enjoy revisiting the original cast of characters. No big surprises. No real courtroom drama, or twists we know everything before it happens. No real story surprises as the author telegraphed everything before the reveals.
Engaging dialogue scenes are buried under lengthy narrative passages. Not a choice I remember from earlier work.
Most unbelievable element is Sheriff Walls and the community obliviousness to the DV.
A hero is only as good as his opponent and even the often flable justice system isn’t so bad. The moral flexibility of the entire cast allows for much massaging of the system to tie up most loose ends.
The harsh reality of juveniles tried as adults makes the reader question laws enforced without context or nuisance. While not as fulfilling as the Haley verdict in A Time To kill, the case portrayed gives hope and satisfies the need for consequences.
Grisham’s best is still the Painted Hoise.

There’s A Lot
Revisado: 06-12-24
Plenty of suspects!
Lots of emotional baggage.
Bring a map if you haven’t been to Skye! The island(s) are as much a character as the people.
Great setup for the series.
As always Angus King is wonderfully nuisanced, giving each character a unique voice even if they aren’t a fully fleshed out main charcter.

Nicely wrapped loose threads, but not Kirk’s best surprise twist. Still very satisfying.

Revisado: 04-06-24
Best JD Kirk book so far. As an author I listen with awe and envy over Kirk’s skill with dialogue and action alike. Bob Hoons insults are on par with the best of Shakespeare’s shade.
Angus King is brilliant. Perfection.

Darkest in the series
Revisado: 06-15-23
Always a joy to revisit these characters. Excellent insight into narcissistic manipulators and zealots, and the damage they create in the vulnerable.
Possible spoilers: The twist wasn’t. Admittedly, as a devourer of the series, it was easy to spot the clues, so new readers may not pickup on character tells.
Felt like this story had a purpose other than crime thriller and that was to wound the characters that seemed to be healing. Supporting cast seemed to serve as contrast to the pain more than further the story.
Overall a great listen. Narration/performance is perfection as usual. However, the ENORMOUS cliffhanger made the book feel like a first act. Not the first time Ellis has left us wondering “what next?” But so many threads dangling on this one.
