I loved this story, and kept waiting for the next jump in time to see where the heroine would land. Super fun, woven into history and literature in a retelling narrative based on todays reality. Recommended highly!

Julia is of course a wonderful narrator. The story, meh honestly. Like most romantic novels. Cute, sure. But I’ve heard/read it one too many times. Yawn

I loved both main character narrators. Great voices and really embodied their characters. Easy beach read, makes you want to fall in love again.

To say at first I do love the idea of a NY comedy show as background that’s reminiscent of SNL but the references are a bit trite. I had never read the author prior and thought it was a man by the name - therefore felt the odd subject of a “less than attractive woman” and “hot celebrity male” was a bit misogynistic but upon realizing it was a female writer with the unfortunate name of Curtis I figured the subject to be more a personal psychological journey. It was an easy story and a good narrator. Passed the time quickly as is evocative of the title. No clue what the reviews about wokeness are about - ignore them.

I hated the main character Emily at the start but she had some redemption. What didn’t was the narrators horrible vocal fry, omg it was absolutely awful! Also many things that needed to be restated over and over - like calling the Aga out 3x in each paragraph in the first three chapters.
Helped me fall asleep.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, I could absolutely forecast what would come next at every turn. Given this is a humanistic story of love and choices it still moved me, to tears and laughter both. I loved the literary references and how each chapter began with a few lines of verse - makes you want to run away to England and have your own year abroad! The story also makes one consider their own choices in life and how to show up for the ones we love, and realize who we love and make it known. Time is finite, love is not.

I must say I’m thoroughly enjoying all his books. Such great dark humor, laugh out loud moments of absurdity. I love the narrators voice and how she can so clearly show derision or joy with a change of tone. The characters all sound different from each other, awesome performance. Also, now that I live in SF it’s amazing to have the city, landmarks and history woven into the tale!

I really enjoyed the first installment of this story - “A Dirty Job” - the sequel, while having some very funny, laugh out loud moments, was a second best. Worth the time, especially if you’ve read the first novel. Quick, dirty, funny and ridiculous.

Great performance by Fisher Steven, the perfect mensch for the beta Asher. Love the way SF architecture, neighborhoods and lore are part of the story and it’s truly macabre. I can really see the mini skeletal animal people - kinda think I saw one in the Mission last week actually …

I love that Octopuses get their due, in this story, for the wonderful and intelligent creatures they are. I read in a review that it’s reminiscent of a “Man called Ove” and yes I can see the similarities to Backman’s style for interwoven character backstories and subplots and how they all come together in the end. Great, heartfelt, intelligent writing.
