Exactly what I hoped and more.
Revisado: 01-30-24
Not sure I was the target demographic the author had in mind, and bought the book almost purely on the cover, but I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. I hoped for a fair treatment, not condemning or accepting and basically got that and some nuanced ways to examine the issue the author presents. Beyond art criticism I left with some philosophical tools and even some economic knowledge. Great book!

Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

Historia
Why do women live longer than men? Why do women have menopause? Why are women more likely to get Alzheimer’s? Why do girls score better at every academic subject than boys until puberty, when suddenly their scores plummet? And does the female brain really exist? In Eve, Cat Bohannon answers questions scientists should have been addressing for decades. With boundless curiosity and sharp wit, she covers the past 200 million years to explain the specific science behind the development of the female sex.

Halfway Through and...
Revisado: 12-06-23
Really enjoying the narrative of the book so far, halfway through (to chpt 6) and just wanted to point out that things become more guesswork and not as strong as the first chapters. Her discussion on female ultramarathon performance only holds to extremely ultra lengths (quick Google search) that I find hard to justify for evolutionary devo; I'm not an expert, but I find it doubtful that early human mothwrs were venturing more than over 150miles on foot (where women really start overtaking males) for food. The chapters labeled Tools really seemed out of place as it was generally about a supposed midwife system. And she mentions that vibrators were created for medical purposes of curing hysteria, which is also revealed to be a fake hypothesis admitted by the author who came up with the idea. Overall enjoying the book though, there are lots of good things here for men and women of all genders to learn about

Historia
In The WEIRDest People in the World, Joseph Henrich draws on cutting-edge research in anthropology, psychology, economics, and evolutionary biology to explore these questions and more. He illuminates the origins and evolution of family structures, marriage, and religion, and the profound impact these cultural transformations had on human psychology. Mapping these shifts through ancient history and late antiquity, Henrich reveals that the most fundamental institutions of kinship and marriage changed dramatically under pressure from the Roman Catholic Church.

Comprehensive, but not that weird.
Revisado: 11-24-23
Fantastically researched book, although it could've been reduced in length and still been effective. Pairs excellent with Guns Germs and Steel for explaining world trends and how we got here (generally). The name of the book is a stretch, although catchy. In fact in the closing chapter the author negates the effects of wealth, neutralizing the R in weird...but the kin ties and opening of new social agreements is highly explanatory. Overall great and important work.

Very easy to get lost in this book as each chapter offers more "ah has". The chapters on politics and immigration in particular were very interesting, though I'm sure they simplify reality. Would recommend to everyone, and anyone in particular interested in understanding the activities of others.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

The reader does such a good job bringing each character to life! The overall story arc from Esme's childhood to the close of the story well after her time is a perfect closed loop. Great listen for any interested in words and the implications and limitations of their useage

Historia
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

Oversells the Feminine Difference
Revisado: 08-04-23
This was a great introduction to the history and differences of Egyptian culture that made it such an impressive civilization that allowed female leaders. The connection to Mythology was very interesting and insightful. I also felt that the author oversold the concept that we would be better off with women rulers; she routinely compared the women rulers to males by indicating they used the same strategies as men, and even made themselves more masculine to project power. They did overcome obstacles and were very smart in shoring up power, but the author's complaint that they would've done better if it were not for men getting in the way belies the fact that men getting in the way of other men is what ultimately causes hardships in our world as well.

Historia
In Jared Diamond’s follow-up to the Pulitzer-Prize winning Guns, Germs and Steel, the author explores how climate change, the population explosion, and political discord create the conditions for the collapse of civilization. Environmental damage, climate change, globalization, rapid population growth, and unwise political choices were all factors in the demise of societies around the world, but some found solutions and persisted.

Meandering off the trail
Revisado: 05-27-23
While of course the narrative is well done, it dips into an NPResque feeling for me as I occasionally check out while listening; the detail involved in describing some cultural practices goes well beyond the intended scope of the book in describing societal collapse. Is it important to understand that Greenland Vikings failed because they couldn't adopt Inuit practices? Yes. Is it necessary to describe precise Inuit boat construction and hunting practices? Less is more next time.

Can a well-programmed machine do anything a human can - only better? Complex algorithms are buying our groceries, picking our partners, and driving our investments. They can navigate more data than a doctor or lawyer and act with greater precision. For many years we've taken solace in the notion that they can't create. But now that algorithms can learn and adapt, does the future of creativity belong to machines too?

Interesting peak at the future
Revisado: 12-13-22
Very interesting read about the development of AI tech, it's possibilities and limitations. Should humble readers, especially those who consider themselves uniquely creative. If you think you are beyond AI creativity, then you may not fall into the ranks of mainstream appreciation for creative works, and if that's the case, you may be no better than cut-rate algorithms. Clearly AI can outpace us in many realms, but we should appreciate that fact and be inspired by it.

Love a Winchester!
Revisado: 11-19-22
As always Simon has a frill for storytelling, and after researching the origins of this book and finding this is one of his earlier works (I have already listened to The Perfectionists and Land) it is obvious that his style of elevating the normally mundane topic was born early in his authoring career. A great bit of biography and study of dictionary making, I will always recommend his work, and my only complaint with this audiobook is the strange way that chapters seem to be divided.
