Robert Peernock appeared to have the ideal life; working as a pyrotechnics engineer and computer expert and coming home to his wife and daughter, he projected the American dream. Even when he and his wife separated, it seemed amicable, just a small bump for the well-to-do family. But there was madness in his house: in private, Peernock was violent, subtly manipulative, and bordering on psychotic.

I almost did not get this book due to the reviews saying it dragged and such. I am so happy I did though because THE BOOK IS FANTASTIC!!! Kept me hooked the entire time. I never felt like it dragged at all. I enjoy Phelps, jerry bledsoe for reference. I dislikes the classics like devil in the white city and midnight in the garden of good and evil. I found those boring and dragging on. So that hopefully gives you an idea of my taste. This book was great!!

This tragic tale concerns two Jewish women living in Hamburg in Nazi Germany before WW2, Ellen Kaempfer and Betty Holstein, and a non-Jewish woman, Elfriede Mollenhauer, who tried to help them. Ellen and Betty were to be deported by cattle train, which meant standing room only, a journey that would take days. They were to be taken from Hamburg to a work camp in Poland, a journey without food or drink, with only a bucket for a toilet.

Not a very well written book. Complete fiction for 99% of the story. I was not impressed. It felt forced.
