Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

A gem!

Michelle Obama is a real gift to our nation and the world. When I am frustrated about the way things are currently in our country, I listen to some of Michelle’s book again.

Historia
A haunting dream that will not relent pulls author Kent Nerburn back into the hidden world of Native America, where dreams have meaning, animals are teachers, and the "old ones" still have powers beyond our understanding. In this moving narrative, we travel through the lands of the Lakota and the Ojibwe, where we encounter a strange little girl with an unnerving connection to the past, a forgotten asylum that history has tried to hide, and complex, unforgettable characters.

Best Read in a Long Time
Revisado: 10-26-19
From horror and despair to warmth and humor, this book had me crying and laughing! Kent Nerburn is an amazing storyteller with a deep knowledge of native ways. He tells many important life truths learned from honored "old ones" and a special wise "young one." That the book is fictionalized wasn't a distraction as Nerburn weaves native wisdom together with what he has learned from close contact with indigenous people. The truth about the white world's oftentimes ignorant treatment of native people, the environment and our connection to the earth is revealed through the Lakota elder, Dan. His words are true and timeless in their wisdom. Dan's worldview subtly infuses itself into my thoughts about life; our environment, the Creator, animals, rocks, and how we treat others, all receive a pinch of the old man's wisdom. Peter Berkrot does a fantastic job of bringing the unforgettable characters to life. Well-done all the way around!

The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

Excellent
Revisado: 07-10-13
Where does The Civil War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It ranks high in the Civil War audiobooks I've listened to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Civil War?
Shelby Foote includes many humorous moments in the narrative that add depth and humanity to the appalling carnage that was the U.S. Civil War. Soldiers enduring unimaginable conditions often saw humor in the worst of it.
What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Gardner has a certain wry tone that fits the telling of a book written about the the Civil War.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Get to know the Civil War as never before!
Any additional comments?
My depth of knowledge of the Civil War has been enhanced by listening to Foote's excellent narrative. Probably not for those who don't have a basic knowledge of the war, however. Being familiar with the major characters and general flow of the war is very helpful.

When prize-winning war correspondent Tony Horwitz leaves the battlefields of Bosnia and the Middle East for a peaceful corner of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he thinks he's put war zones behind him. But awakened one morning by the crackle of musket fire, Horwitz starts filing front-line dispatches again - this time from a war close to home, and to his own heart.

An Interesting Insight
Revisado: 02-20-10
Horwitz's exploration into the world of current and past confederates is an interesting one. The modern day Southern Rebel is fascinating. Tony's experiences with the Civil War reenactors stay in my mind. Some of the scarier characters also make an impression. Any fan of American history will enjoy this book.

Historia
In this dramatic first-person narrative, Greg Mortenson picks up where Three Cups of Tea left off in 2003, recounting his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan; his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake hit the region in 2005; and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders. He shares for the first time his broader vision to promote peace through education and literacy.

Inspiring
Revisado: 02-20-10
Greg Mortenson deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. He has done more to advance the cause of women in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan than any other person. The fact that the U.S. military listens to him and requires those serving in the region to read his books is testament to Greg's wisdom and experience. I recommend this book to everyone.
