Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

I hope there will be multiple addendums to this before Isaacson and Musk are gone. This is a fabulous read and doesn't take a stance on Musk one way or the other. it gives you all the faults and all the pluses in a beautifully written straightforward way that makes it a quick read.

Historia
In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year globe-spanning quest.

Loved the book and the narration. It really painted a detailed picture of all the insane, corrupt characters that built this house of cards.

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Many hours of a brief show segment
Revisado: 10-14-22
I thought Bill had borrowed the phrase "New Rules" from his show for the book title. I didn't realize that the book is quite literally hours upon hours of the New Rules segment. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, but I didn't think you could get a whole book out of the New Rules but of his show. It kind of drags after a while, much as I like Maher.

Historia
For centuries in Europe, innocent men and women were murdered for the imaginary crime of witchcraft. This was a mass delusion and moral panic, driven by pious superstition and a deadly commitment to religious conformity. In Witch: A Tale of Terror, best-selling author Sam Harris introduces and reads from Charles Mackay's beloved book, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds.

Short, but full of bizarre little anecdotes
Revisado: 10-10-22
One often reads witch accounts to observe the absurd lengths mass hysteria and conventional wisdom will take people. This book cuts through a lot of the historical context and philosophy behind the witch pursuits and goes straight to the nitty gritty anecdotes with a little context to help you understand why certain townsfolk saw fit to string up and burn kids and old ladies. Quick, fun seasonal read around Halloween.

Historia
Jared Kushner was one of the most consequential presidential advisers in modern history. For the first time, he recounts what happened behind closed doors during the Trump presidency. Few White House advisors have had such an expansive portfolio or constant access to the president. From his office next to Trump, senior adviser Jared Kushner operated quietly behind the scenes, preferring to leave the turf wars and television sparring to others.

Revisado: 09-17-22
Self-indulgent, plodding tripe. I don't even have an axe to grind necessarily, but I couldn't stand this book. I sat through it because there wasn't much else that I could enjoy with my staff who lean this way politically. I kept cranking the reading speed to get to the end. What a bore.

Historia
As a highly respected pollster for corporate and Republican clients and a frequent television talk show guest, Kellyanne Conway had already established herself as one of the brightest lights on the national political scene when Donald Trump asked her to run his presidential campaign. She agreed, delivering him to the White House, becoming the first woman in American history to manage a winning presidential campaign. Who she is, how she did it, and who tried to stop her is a fascinating story of personal triumph and political intrigue that has never been told…until now.

Puts you in the Trump White House
Revisado: 05-29-22
This is by far the most insightful thing I have read about the Trump White House and I believe it. I felt like I was there. I think Kellyanne's scars are clear and there's a lot of vicious takedowns here, maybe not undeserved, but I definitely feel for this person--you can hear the pain. She was in the trenches and she fought. a. war. I think she was Trump's best general and was ultimately marginalized by her own family. Yes, it sounds like Jared played a role, but I wonder to what extent Trump was not unaware of the friction between his son-in-law and Kellyanne, and if Jared was knowingly the avatar of an unwitting Trump that truly didn't want to marginalize his best general, but felt he had no choice because of the daily drama brought on by Kellyanne's problems at home. Had he intervened personally, he would have risked an essential relationship. Is it possible that Trump wanted some distance from Kellyanne's personal problems, but didn't want to fully compromise the obvious colossal value of her political skill to his campaign? Was Jared the fall guy in this respect? Not to say Jared is not also an egomaniac and inexperienced as Kellyanne says, but just that there's maybe a little more to the story. Regardless, I think Trump was underserved by Jared, all the other whackjobs and grifters, and Trump's ego that led him to them. I think it's clear by the end of the book that Kellyanne was Trump's biggest asset and George Conway may have been Trump's single biggest problem not for any of George's own intrinsic worth or skill, but because he managed to deprive Trump of Kellyanne. I don't think anyone needs more Trump right now, but if he wants any chance of a second crack at the White House, it's not happening without her.

Historia
The voyage of the Mayflower and the founding of Plymouth Colony is one of the seminal events in world history. But the poorly equipped group of English Puritans who ventured across the Atlantic in the early autumn of 1620 had no sense they would pass into legend. They had 80 casks of butter and two dogs but no cattle for milk, meat, or ploughing. They were ill prepared for the brutal journey and the new land that few of them could comprehend.

Highly informative and Even-handed
Revisado: 11-24-20
This book is highly informative and doesn't stray too far into either myth making or attempting to adjudicate historical events retroactively. It follows a framework of focusing in on the key families on the voyage and native to the Plymouth area from the voyage to their deaths with useful details added as needed. These stories are woven together with attention given to the men and the women of pilgrim and native birth for a fuller picture of the Plymouth milieu. I tend to pick up a history of the period around Thanksgiving time each year, and this is the best I've read thus far.

Historia
Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy's "Golden Age" when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of these seafaring outlaws.

The original is great, sequel not so much
Revisado: 10-17-18
Absolutely great novelization of the original with some interesting insights into the characters internal monologues. The sequel, however, is atrocious. The original cast is sent to hell to open the way for a new cast to retread the last generation's footsteps. The author tacks a political agenda on to an inferior version of the 1993 story. It's tepid fanfiction with a forced diversity angle that never bears fruit for the characters. Poppy is an interesting character that needed more time to cook, but her cohorts are underdeveloped. Skip the sequel, but do read the novelization of the original.
