The content in this book is changing my life. Dave Asprey is a Dogsend.

It irks me that the narrator pronounces so many words and names incorrectly. He easily could have spent the time to Google “how to pronounce X”, where X is “tinnitus”, “nootropics”, “Kelly Starrett”, or the plethora of other words/names he butchered… but he couldn’t be arsed.

If your job is to deliver words to thousands of people or more, it seems rather important to not wing it on words or names you don’t know.

- Dialog performance was good
- Narration performance was poor. I honestly thought it was computer generated
- Story was OK, but very cheesy and loaded with plot holes. I groaned at several moment

I started this series with the Graphic Audio versions. Unfortunately, they don’t have a version for each book in the series yet. I had to finish the series, but holy cow was it hard.

For some reason, Renee Raudman insists on portraying an old man or an old woman for almost every character. 18-year-old guy? Grandpa. 30-year-old guy? Grandpa. 40-year-old guy? Grandma for some reason. Grandma? Same voice as the 40-year-old guy. I just don’t get it. If you asked someone to impersonate an elderly person, it would sound exactly like Renee Raudman voice acting nearly anyone but the protagonist.

Her voice selection was awful. A ~30-year-old sounds like an elderly man. A woman in her 20s sounds like an elderly woman. All of the accents are ridiculous. She also apparently needs to record herself voicing each actor and refer to the recordings periodically because she keeps changing their voices.

I think Renee Raudman could have done a better job. Her performance elsewhere is great. Her narration sounded elderly and her accents were ridiculous.

I think sharing factual information is very useful. Sharing things like “disposable vape cartridges were designed to appeal to teenagers” is not helpful. Where are the studies from vape manufacturers on teenagers? Those cartridges are designed to taste good. You know who likes things that taste good? Everyone. Maybe calm down out the outrage tactics and share candid information instead of sensationalist information.

How did you mess that up?

I’m so confused how a team of professionals managed to screw up congruity so completely.

It was established in the first audiobook that Lakelanders have British-like accents. The narrator for Evangeline got it, but the narrator for Iris somehow missed it? What’s worse is that toward the end of the book, the narrators for Mare and Evangeline stop using an accent for one of the Lakelanders characters (Iris) but continue for another (Farley). How? How can you mess that up so badly? Plan ahead, people.

That said, the narrators performances are still fantastic, so I gave it 3 stars.

As far as the story goes, I’m baffled how people said this audiobook was too boring. It’s filled with suspense, intrigue, romance, and there’s never a dull moment.

Persist through the first book

The story and narration really didn’t click with me in the first book. However, because I was in a drought of my favorite audiobook series, I continued on. I’m glad I did. The story got better and I became more invested in the characters.

I feel that the narrator maintains the same tone and inflection regardless of context. Asking for a beer? Shouting out as your loved one is about to perish? Whispering to conceal movements? Same volume, same tone, same inflection. Definitely some improvement to be made there.

The voices are OK but inconsistent. “Del” and “Cas” often have the same voice. Sometimes Del’s voice is deeper, but not always.

Either way, I think this boxed set is worth your time and money.

Every time I run out of Annette Marie books to listen to, I get withdrawals. I am so invested in her series that I feel the same kind of genuine emotion I would for a close friend as I do for the characters in her stories.

I am very much invested in both Guild Codex series and the Steel & Stone series. I can't wait for Blackfire to come out.

I don't doubt this book is helpful to many.

However, I've been doing boxing, body-building -esque exercises, and powerlifting for years. I heard of Dr. Stuart McGill from Stan Efferding, and in reading reviews of Stu's "The Back Mechanic", I came across this title.

In my opinion, this book should have been cut in thirds. For me, there was way too much repetitive information and narratives about what *didn't* work. I don't need to be told 50 times that halting exercise regresses progress. I want a concise yet complete understanding of how to avoid and repair damage.

If you're interested in the journalistic aspect, get this. Having an audiobook was a great way to whet my appetite on my commutes while my books were being shipped from Amazon. I would recommend listening on at least 1.5x speed. For me, the narration was quite slow and seemed to arbitrarily emphasize certain words or characters' testimonies. It also seemed to greatly detail studies contrary to typical medicine, but only rely on anecdotal evidence for procedures from "back gurus". Anecdotal information is great, but the imbalance seemed very biased.

If you want solutions, skip this and go straight to Dr. Stuart McGill's "The Back Mechanic" and/or "The Gift of Injury".
