Historia

great audible selection on Mexico
Revisado: 02-03-19
extremely detailed story on the beginnings of the Mexican wars of independence, and told with a great sense of wit and humor, too. A must have audible for anyone studying the revolutionary movements of the 18th and 19th centuries.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

you have no idea how many people relate to your story, me being one of them. the characters might be different and so are the languages and family settings, but the core of the story is the same. we get to know our past long after most of the people that influenced it are gone.

This book is the culmination of fifteen years of research and travels that have taken the author completely around the world twice. Its purpose has been to try to understand the role of cultural differences within nations and between nations, today and over the centuries of history, in shaping the economic and social fates of peoples and of whole civilizations.

extraordinary book about world history
Revisado: 04-07-16
It's one of the best audible books I've listened too. The narration takes you not just through human history but explains how the same patterns show up no matter the country, the era or the culture. It's the story if the "to have and have not" spanning cultures overlapping one another by war, colonization or even by marriages. this book is addictive from start to finish

Graham Hancock's multi-million bestseller Fingerprints of the Gods remains an astonishing, deeply controversial, wide-ranging investigation of the mysteries of our past and the evidence for Earth's lost civilization. Twenty years on, Hancock returns with the sequel to his seminal work filled with completely new scientific and archaeological evidence, which has only recently come to light.

amazing history book of our forgotten world
Revisado: 02-11-16
One of the best books I've read on world history. If the nations accepted the facts there was a fully developed civilization before the end of the ice age, religious zelaouts will still deny it. After all, religion is the opium of the masses.

Historia
Using tools as varied as archaeo-astronomy, geology, and computer analysis of ancient myths, author Graham Hancock presents a compelling case to suggest that the story of mankind is far older than we have previously believed. And as the truth about prehistory and the real meaning of ancient myths and monuments is revealed, it becomes apparent that a warning has been handed down to us: a terrible cataclysm that afflicts the Earth at irregular intervals of time may be about to occur.

Ask anyone about the significance of the year 1492, and you're almost certain to hear something about Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the New World. But there is also a perspective on 1492 far different than the one most of us know-one that is more complete and complex. A 1492 when there was no country called Spain and no language called Spanish.

An extraordinary history about the truth of 1492
Revisado: 01-24-16
Great attention to separating the myth of the discovery with the reality. The not so glamorous creation of a world wide empire by chance, fate and a lot of luck. And it all started with the Reconquest of a peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean. One of my favorite audible books in my history books collection because so much detail, and trivia facts, that makes the discovery of America parallel to the first moon landing. Professor Ruiz is so engaging in his love for separating the fictional accounts from reality that you don't want him to stop. What was made popular in movies and schools is shown against the not so glamorous truth, most times without Hollywood-LIKE happy endings. I hope he continues this into a series!

Would you listen to The Poison King again? Why?
This book and the narration is above and beyond any other history book in Audible. The narration is impeccable and the story of the Poison King and his allies begs for a TV series of its own.
As a TV series:
Starting with a you prince and the scheming Queens and concubines is enough for a 3 season TV spectacle like Reign, Game of Thrones, etc. I can picture the role with one of the teen idols from Teen Werewolf or Twisted in a swashbuckling adventure between the young Mithradates, his BFF young Tigranes, and adventures through fantastic Baltic sea and Asia Minor Kingdoms, pirate lords and as counter evil to unite them all: Roma and Persia!
This books begs to be an on-going TV series!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mirthradates, followed by his son in law Tigranes the Great.
What about Paul Hecht’s performance did you like?
EVERYTHING!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"if you like Game of Thrones...meet The Poison King!
Any additional comments?
Listeners should do a standing ovation when the book reaches its end, cause this is top quality material that needs to be sold to HBO, Starz or AMC as a regular TV series

Hollywood Nun movies from the Drag perspective!
Revisado: 10-24-14
What made the experience of listening to The Divine Sister the most enjoyable?
The cast was amazing reading the Charles Busch play as if they wrote the lines themselves.
What other book might you compare The Divine Sister to and why?
Judith of Bethulia, Whores of Lost Atlantis and anything Charles Busch.
Because Busch's ability to retell a story from the contemporary point of view, and make you feel its Bette Davis narrating it cigarette in one hand and a drink in another one.
Which scene was your favorite?
The big reveal, no spoiler here but the coughing scene between the lead Nun and her new benefactor.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, then start all over again as my default 'music; while I head for the office.
Any additional comments?
Someone should ask the South Park guys to buy it and make it into a musical like The Book of Mormon. Starring Chita Rivera, or Nathan Lane as the Nun in question.

Written by and starring Broadway legend Charles Busch, this is the world premiere of his new play which is an outrageous and bawdy celebration of the Hollywood Biblical Epic genre! Lepers, whores, eunuchs, centurions, evil generals, youthful poets, and a beautiful redheaded widow make Charles Busch’s comedy a story worth praying for.

The Queen of Drag Theater at his/her best!
Revisado: 10-24-14
Where does Judith of Bethulia rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Its a great group performance with Charles Busch giving his leading ladies throw more shade to one another that all RuPaul Drag Races combined.
What did you like best about this story?
The amazing Charles Busch finally makes his plays into Audible books and I, for one, am in Heaven!
Judith of Bethulia re-tells the Biblical legendary diva via a New Yawk interpretation with jokes and punch lines flying at the speed of a NY cab driver.
Imagine someone like Bette Davis. Rosalind Russell. Joan Crawford or Bea Arthur on the lead role of a hard boiled grand dame saving the people of David, but dressed to the nines while spitting out one line zingers.
Amazingly entertaining.
Which scene was your favorite?
Judith of Bethulia helping the starved doing the shopping for the poor that includes a porterhouse steak with the veins.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The Lady in Question is...Judith of Bethulia. Starring Bianca Del Rio, Lady Bunny and Miss Coco Peru.
Any additional comments?
We need all Charles Busch plays and novels in Audible.
