Historia
Arthur Leywin's quest for the power he knows only as Fate becomes even more pressing as his most dangerous foes gain a terrible new power. When the war between the dragons of Epheotus and the basilisks of Alacrya erupts across Dicathen, the people Arthur cares about most find themselves trapped in a clash of deities. The only way to master Fate and protect them, though, is to place them directly in harm's way in the ultimate gambit.

Historia
Eric is a physicist, an angel vivisectionist, and an architect of the future. He's also an accidental time traveler, stuck in the past and trying to re-create his own future. Now he's got to save the world for a better tomorrow, but not like everyone does, in general, every day. Oh, no. He has to make a better tomorrow that looks exactly the way he remembers it, or there may be no yesterday, no today, and no Eric! There is a reason he hates time travel, and it has nothing to do with physics.

Book 8 and I'm still craving more
Revisado: 10-31-24
I love the writing style, the narration and the overall adventure that is in this literature. (spoiler) I have to say that this book was like every day in the life of...without the big bad to conquer. It's a nice pace for where we are in the series, so long as book 9 comes at us with more story through-line.
I'm glad to have found this series as I find the critical thinking skills and the methodology used by the character to be soothing and engaging.

SAGA CONTINUES STRONG
Revisado: 05-22-24
LOVE THE BOOK AND THE ENTIRE SERIES. Here's why:
What I love about this saga of a story is how Krout reminds the audience that she doesn't intend for the plot to grow stagnant. She writes in the real world issue of becoming complacent with all the elements we can get used to liking but then upheave those in constant pursuit of pushing for an end goal. I believe it gives the series the hope to have a ending that is written intentionally and with a purpose.
I remember the first few pages of book 1 of the series and I've always hoped that the story will eventually return back onto the subject of that origin and offer explanation, giving us a sense of 'completion'.... holding true to the series name.
What I liked about this book specifically was the struggle presented and how it had to be handled by others as we can grow used to our big hero coming thru with a larger than life deux ex machina moment. Don't get me wrong, those moments help define the main character to me, but it's nice to see that he can be out-classed and be a bit helpless at times, which are key to any heroes growth. I Love the series and hope to see it stay popular enough that we get to see the story come to a written end when we get there. Dakota, we've put much time in your characters, please don't abandon them without giving us closure to the story. :) I only say that because as the number of books is added, the more of an investment we readers make into these characters also.

Historia
Joe the Ritualist and the town of Novusheim have survived their first major battle, at the cost of leaving most of the settlement a smoking crater. Only most of it. The core of the town survived, and permanent casualties were low. Now that the survivors have a better understanding of what to expect, they go on a reconstruction spree...but why stop there? Every inch of their upgraded defenses will be more potent, durable, and deadlier than ever before.

stellar example of how powerful storytelling and masterful narration can combine to create an unforgettable auditory experience. I didn't want to be worshiped like some deity—an instant replacement for the asuras. For so long, these people looked up to the asuras as gods, but the asuras kept trying to kill them. Arthur Leywin has finally returned to the continent of Dicathen, but his home is still firmly in the hands of the enemy. His display of unprecedented power brings hope to his allies and fear to his enemies. It also deeply embroils him in a conflict between the godlike asuras, with Agrona Vritra on one side and Kezess Indrath on the other.

Historia
Joe the Ritualist fled Alfheim with the remnants of the Dwarven Oligarchy at his side. Though the hairy warriors number in the tens of thousands, they stand at the brink of extinction; and the new world they landed on isn’t pulling any punches. Jotunheim is a winter wonderland featuring a vast array of monsters: the least of which are hulking lizard-ape Hoardlings, and carnivorous penguins standing a dozen feet tall.

Story Advanced
Revisado: 01-10-23
I'll give it 5 stars . The performance is amazing , and it has a nice advancement into the series .
The author is skimming on the edges of trauma culture, however. A big chunk of the book was dedicated to recognizing the trauma and frailty of characters. I will commend the decision to at least make events really traumatic and not just being traumatized due to being offended.
Spoiler: I feel that the trauma experienced by Patrick was off character, as he's one of the most gung ho fighters who's willing to jump into impossible situations . So that entire section just felt like it was written to demonstrate more trauma culture . If there is a theme of this book, it would be "everybody hurts". It was explaining and preaching to us that even the most powerful individuals can feel trauma , sympathize with trauma and defend trauma.
Because this is more of my own thoughts and opinions , I'm not going to lower my 5 star rating. The story is still a great story and I'm glad to have stuck with the series. But if the author keeps using it as a platform for trauma, I may just bow out of the rest of the series. I don't mind trauma being recognized , but after reading the book it's hard to see it as anything else than a platform for a culture that is racist and insensitive to trauma.
Moreso in this book than the others is the push for the gender and homosexuality shifts. But those were written more naturally , as if they already belonged in the book series. This new shift to trauma just seemed over the top.
I recommend the book if you see reading the series. It has some great moments, and as far as performance goes ...it's absolutely stellar.
One more comment....the name just doesn't connect at all with the story .

Rough Gem , Great future
Revisado: 11-29-22
There are moments the author hits his stride and you become excited for the story. And there are moments where you have to accept this is James Butchers first novel release . I do recommend you to read this book. James is going to be part of the future generation, and he should not be over looked. The book is hard to get thru, even though it's short (8hrs or so). Here's why : there isn't enough forward movement to develop the characters outside of where they are in the story. They are still too 2 dimensional, and they are missing a sense of importance to us. The story focuses too heavily on the characteristics about them that it doesn't offer any room to feel for them . Yes that's vague but how do you describe a story that seems to have all the right elements, and yet still somehow fails to grab you? That's this story. it has all the right stuff but it fails to surprise you, grab at you, or engage with you.
It's a wonderful beginning for a writing career and I'm going to continue following James's career for two reasons , he's connected to Jim Butcher and James Cronin (narrator ). With both of these professionals in his corner I know that he will continue to push past his weaknesses and grow to become an even greater writer than those before him.
Until then though....give us a character that we can look up to, not one that barely survives bc of deux machina moments . You have to give us a real hero, because this book didn't make sense at all as the character had no real reason why he could have defeated those enemies . The adversary characters were written to be downright stupid and made really dumb decisions . Your audience can only take so much of that kind of action .
