As someone diagnosed with Bipolar, I found this book helpful on two levels. Although difficult to get through at some parts due to the abundance of information, John first educates the reader on the medical facts of Bipolar Disorder. He highlights topics such as risk factors, symptoms, differing types, commonly used medications and other treatments, and in a whole, general information of the illness. Second, he gives a firsthand account of what is it like to endure a life with Bipolar. He goes into great detail of his personal experience from his first episode of psychosis, which lead to his diagnosis, up until his life at the time he was writing the book. The pictures he paints are so raw and descriptive that the reader is able to put themselves in John's shoes and see a glimpse of what life looks like when you deal with Bipolar daily. He courageously discusses his fears, lifestyle adjustments, obstacles, achievements, failures, relationships, and opinions of Bipolar life. He does so in a conversational tone which is almost comical in some parts. Thank you John for opening up your world and helping us to start to understand.
