Historia
From the opening story, "Willing" - about a second-rate movie actress in her 30s who has moved back to Chicago, where she makes a seedy motel room her home and becomes involved with a mechanic who has not the least idea of who she is as a human being - Birds of America unfolds a startlingly brilliant series of portraits of the unhinged, the lost, the unsettled of our America. Lorrie Moore explores the personal and the universal, the idiosyncratic and the mundane, with all the wit, brio, and verve that have made her one of the best storytellers of our time.

Reader killed this for me
Revisado: 10-28-23
Picked this up on a recommendation. It would be better in print copy. This reader’s delivery puts a snarky tone on several characters in an almost mocking way , and I don’t think I would have read it the same way in my head. Had to stop after the 2 minute laugh track. Too much

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Doesn’t live up to potential
Revisado: 03-18-23
The idea of time travel could have made for a very interesting story. But this did not live up to its potential. I had hope in the beginning, but it never got there. The characters felt shallow to the point that I didn’t care about them. The lead characters are actually pretty unlikeable. I would have liked more from the supporting characters, who seemed more interesting. Some of the language was crass and unimaginative. Felt like a seedy romance novel. I think I would have preferred reading this to listening. Claire’s voice was gratingly annoying (to the pint of almost unlistenable) as a whiny child then evolved into a bland yet still juvenile voice. Henry always sounded angry and a little pompous (reminded me of Charlie Sheen). I guess his character would have cause to be angry but not all the time. I do not recommend this audiobook .

Last Chance Texaco is the first-ever no-holds-barred account of the life of two-time Grammy Award-winner Rickie Lee Jones in her own words. It is a tale of desperate chances and impossible triumphs, an adventure story of a girl who beat the odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into timeless music.

Lyrical and captivating
Revisado: 01-02-22
Just as in her songs, Rickie Lee Jones uses her lyricism and poetry to draw you in. Her story is one of deep emotion, humanity, struggle, perseverance, and reflection . I could not put it down.

Riley Kennedy’s emails keep getting crossed with her male colleague, Kennedy Riley. The infuriating man forwards them along with his annoying commentary and unsolicited advice. At least she never has to see him in person, since they work in different locations…until they come face to face at the office holiday party.

Predictable Romance Fluff
Revisado: 01-05-20
I got this for free from Audible Originals monthly selections and sort of knew what I was getting into. I'm glad it was super short. Is was sappy and predictable. The writing was stereotypical of the romance genre. For example, twice they used the phrase "it looked like Christmas threw up on it." That sounded terrible and unoriginal the first time. It definitely did not need to be said twice! The female reader was good. She sounded age appropriate to the character and had emotion in her delivery. The male reader was not a good fit. He sounded like a grizzled old cocky man rather than a young gentleman that was portrayed in the writing.

Historia
From 1965 to 1995, the Grateful Dead flourished as one of the most beloved, unusual, and accomplished musical entities to ever grace American culture. The creative synchronicity among Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan exploded out of the early 60s roots and folk scene, providing the soundtrack for the Dionysian revels of the counterculture. Dennis McNally, the band's historian and publicist for more than 20 years, takes listeners back through the Dead's history.

Definitely Long and Strange
Revisado: 01-05-20
I liked this book. I've read a lot of Grateful Dead biographies by various band and staff members. All have unique perspectives. And it's nice to see the different angles (and sometimes contradictions) through their writings. The reader, unfortunately, was not well matched to this book. His mispronunciations of names etc. is very jarring. For example, he pronounces Jorma with a hard J for the first few chapters before changing to a soft J later. Why not go back and fix it? I think he may have listened to a few songs to know how to deliver them in spoken cadence. But overall, it was a passionless read. The book would have been better served being read by either the author or a Dead Head. But still worth it if you enjoy Grateful Dead biographies.
