Noticable decline in localization quality

The adherence to Japanese syntax is easily the single most glaring issue with this volume. Yes, most of the T/L is fine, but it definitely takes you out of the experience when the verbiage use or awkward sentence structure distracts you. Also, Chris Guerrero's narration, while good for 90%, falls flat when it comes to kids and women... It's not really his fault.

easily about as bad as the lizardmen arc

Lizardmen arc was bad. This is only less bad because half of it is side stories. Honestly, it's great to see the almost everyday lives of all the characters, but having to sit through the goblin village first, made this volume taxing.

I miss old localizations like this

Anyone who knows the series already knows what they're getting into. There's honestly no need to bring up the quality of the performance nor the story.

For those not well informed of the era this was localized, there was an attempt to make the Spice and Wolf series more acceptable to the mainstream, complete with a modestly amusing and clearly furry-bait cover. It was met with outcry from the general weeb audience and might have even lost some sales as a result. The fact that we see the original Japanese cover art now is a wonderful tacit omission of the failure of that marketing campaign.

But in trying to mainstream it, they did manage to create an excellent localization that reads (almost) as naturally as any contemporary, young-adult piece of literature. Gone are the questionable Japanese literary devices that are, clunky at best, in English prose. Along with it, the Japanese syntax and the obligatory English grammatical gymnastics needed to make it work. The setting being a generic medieval Europe-like country certainly doesn't hurt.

I've only ever actually read the first volume back in the day. I hope that the subsequent volumes maintain this level of quality.

I would have liked to have heard what happened to Stratt. The entire bit where she said that she would likely be tried and then jailed was surprisingly poignant.

Still a good ride

The prose is getting worse. The translator is clearly phoning it in, but it's not like I'm here for high literature. It's acceptable enough for what it is.

The beginning where they try to give the "Workers" some agency is almost on par with the Lizardmen arc, that is to say boring. Maybe knowing what was going to happen didn't help. The actual adventure portion was just gold; awkward syntax notwithstanding, of course.

Barring the TL differences, enjoyable.

The difference between the LN translation choices vs the later anime translator choices with the benefit of hearing the Japanese actually say some of those names is still prevalent. It's a little jarring to hear those name differences, but overall an okay experience

Localization inconsistencies

Translator confused 'R' and 'L' sounds in the names. Cocodoll became Cocodoor, Succulent became Securante or something like that. I guess they felt the original Japanese was too corny, but let's have accurate translations, thanks.

Still the weakest story arc
