Historia
You walk into a restaurant and get an immediate sense that you should leave. You are about to step onto an elevator with a stranger, and something stops you. You interview a potential new employee who has the résumé to do the job, but something tells you not to offer the position. These scenarios all represent "left of bang", the moments before something bad happens.

So much filler

Good, but...
Revisado: 06-07-21
Branagh is a class act, and the story is timeless, but though Branagh acts the parts wonderfully, it is very frustrating to listen to during a commute, as he goes from a bellow to a whisper in a moment.

Historia
In the1930s and '40s, Black Mask was the single most important magazine for the modern mystery field. Here writers such as Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Earl Stanley Gardner reshaped the established view of mystery fiction, creating the "hard-boiled" private eye. Now this series resurrects from those pages the toughest of tough detectives in sonic dramatizations from the award-winning Hollywood Theater of the Ear.

Overproduced and ironic
Revisado: 06-04-21
The overproduction simply takes the focus away from the stories, and the performances all feel self-aware, ironic, and purposefully over the top.
If the actors can’t engage with the source material how can I?

Historia
The men in the tan-and-cream Chrysler came with guns blazing. When Ray Kelly woke up in the hospital, it was a month later, he was missing an eye, and his father was dead. Then things started to get bad. From the mind of the incomparable Donald E. Westlake comes a devastating story of betrayal and revenge, an exploration of the limits of family loyalty and how far a man will go when everything he loves is taken from him.

Boring
Revisado: 06-04-21
This book is really hard work. There are lots of descriptions of uninteresting or ancillary characters and the action bogs down frequently.

Tough, cynical PI Sam Spade is hired by the story's irresistible femme fatale, Brigid O'Shaughnessy, to locate the client's sister by tailing her companion. Spade's partner, Miles Archer, takes on the assignment, and quickly both he and the man he was shadowing are murdered. Good story, soporific performance
Revisado: 05-30-21
The story is as good as most of Hammett’s, but the performance by the narrator, tries for atmospheric and reaches only dull.

Historia
The third and most ambitious of Michael Palin's adventures is a voyage of epic proportions - the circumnavigation of the Pacific Rim. He travels for almost a year through the 18 countries that border the world's largest ocean, and is forced to negotiate mountains, plunging gorges, cross glaciers and dodge icebergs. Volcanoes also mark Palin's journey. He climbs one which has freshly erupted and follows great rivers like the Yangtze and the Amazon to some of the most remote places on earth.

This one is a miss.
Revisado: 05-27-21
I’m a big fan of Around the World in 80 Days and Pole to Pole, but the steam seems to have gone out of Palin and co. with this one. It seems a very aimless outing, and without particular deadlines or constraints, it gets a bit boring at times, like listening to a very posh man narrating his holidays.
The writing also leaves something to be desired. If you take a shot every time you hear “short, sharp shock” or “limpid pool” you may not make it through.

Historia
On August 5, 1949, a crew of 15 of the United States Forest Service's elite airborne firefighters, the Smokejumpers, stepped into the sky above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours after their jump, all but three of these men were dead or mortally burned. Haunted by these deaths for 40 years, Norman Maclean puts back together the scattered pieces of the Mann Gulch tragedy.

Melancholic, interesting, meandering.
Revisado: 01-30-19
This book was not finished in Maclean's lifetime and you can tell. Although the research is superb, and certain sections magnificent, it meanders and desperately needed a good editor. It is still a fine book and worth the trouble, but bear this in mind.

Way too quiet.
Revisado: 06-26-16
The book is interesting. No complaints there.
The audio levels on this audiobook are way too quiet, though. You have to strain to hear it sometimes.
