Great but would rather read paper book
Revisado: 04-17-25
Very very useful book for managers. My first dive into managering books and I'm glad I did some homework. I'd say 90% of managers don't know how to do any of this or how to manage people. My only comment is I would never suggest this book in audio format. I bought on eBay and highly suggest in that format. Easier to think and process and write notes you need to follow up on

Historia
In the bestselling The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver showed how forecasting would define the age of Big Data. Now, in this timely and riveting new book, Silver investigates "The River," or those whose mastery of risk allows them to shape—and dominate—so much of modern life. These professional risk takers—poker players and hedge fund managers, crypto true-believers and blue-chip art collectors—can teach us much about navigating the uncertainty of the 21st century.

Historia
Most of us spend a significant part of the day in front of a screen. Our work and social lives play out through our computers, tablets and phones: on email, social media, video conference calls and gaming servers. But what is all this screen time doing to our health, our sleep, and our relationships? Professor Pete Etchells studies the way we use screens, and how they can affect us. In UNLOCKED, he delves into the real science behind the panic about our alleged device addiction and withering attention spans.

Good until he went into liberal ideology in Ch 7
Revisado: 02-11-25
Premise is good. He tries to be objective when discussing the science of screen time and it's impact on adults and mostly a focus on kids (he uses his own a lot as an example). Mostly well read and well cited, like I expect from a PhD (I also have a PhD and still linked to academia). I liked it up until Chapter 7, he went on this liberal tirade about how only blacks and minorities are attacked on platforms like Facebook. I've seen the opposite, they had to shut it down because 90%+ of the hate was directed at white people, it's just the the left doesn't see a problem with "white privilege" or other racist sayings, they only see race as a one way street and only see what they want to see. You can't say anything as a white person anymore or be successful because racists like him will tear us down for being successful with ideology. He doesn't cite one single fact during his nonsense, just the same liberal garbage as always you hear from the left. There is no equality anymore, just one has to be better than others to be equal now.. Sad to see this but they have to use their platform to indoctrinate readers.

Historia
Heart disease is the number-one killer. However, traditional heart disease protocols - with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol - have it all wrong. Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. The Great Cholesterol Myth reveals the real culprits of heart disease.

Sensationalizes a lot but I think he gets to the right conclusion anyway
Revisado: 07-29-24
So he seems very biased compared to most PhDs. I don't really respect him as a PhD and can't even find a Google scholar on him so I'm not even sure he has a PhD but does seem like he reads literature. My only concern is how biased he is. I don't think he comes at this with an open mind but I do think there is plenty of research to back his claims. Every one I tried to dispel did hold some water if not a lot. I did state reading Why we get sick by Ben Bikman. It's way better but doesn't cover cholesterol as much. I'd still suggest but would also suggest doing your own reading and not listening to all the stuff this guy says.

The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Worth a read
Revisado: 07-10-24
I just really enjoy his core message. Just that you need to stop being a victim and take control of your life. You can do anything you set your mind to mindset. More people today need this and are very weak. The details are interesting and it's a cool story but not relatable to the average person. Most people don't even exercise. But the broad story and message is and I think we can all do better.

In this classic book, Milton Friedman provides the definitive statement of his immensely influential economic philosophy - one in which competitive capitalism serves as both a device for achieving economic freedom and a necessary condition for political freedom.

Really fantastic book describing how politics and economics interact
Revisado: 06-28-24
This book really carefully goes through how politics and economics interact. The case is made that freedom and capitalism go hand in hand. The case is very well made as we can't have full gov control and control our own lives individually.

The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....

Now, most people have heard of ADHD and know someone who may have it. But lost in the discussion of both childhood and adult diagnosis of ADHD is the potential upside: Many hugely successful entrepreneurs and highly creative people attribute their achievements to ADHD. Also unknown to most are the recent research developments, including innovations that give a clearer understanding of the ADHD brain in action.

Could have been a 10 min read
Revisado: 04-19-23
Very repetitive. Just could have read this all in an article in maybe 10 min. Or at most a 1 hr podcast. Just repeats the same stuff over and over. I mean his 4 rules literally could have been a bullet list. The ideas are fine. Unpractical for most everyone but I get the point. The most helpful is to learn to live without a phone. Either turn it off or I put it in the other room or up on a shelf in my work office. Professors have the ability to say F the world. I work for a company but oddly work in a university as an adjunct. They don't answer to anyone. They don't even have a boss. So they can delete all on their inbox and nothing happens. This is not business. Totally think you can only check email maybe 2x per day. I try more to check first thing and last thing in the day. But you can't just turn yourself off. So I'd say it's super extreme. I have a PhD and I can say the general idea is correct.

Unbelievable how good it is
Revisado: 04-13-23
Thomas cuts through all the nonsense we hear in the media and through politics and gets to the heart of the issues. I can't recommend it enough, especially for younger generations. We don't teach even basic economics in schools like we should. I would buy a copy for anyone you care about.
