Historia
When the Cassidy-Shaws’ autonomous minivan collides with an oncoming car, seventeen-year-old Charlie is in the driver’s seat, with his father, Noah, riding shotgun. In the back seat, tweens Alice and Izzy are on their phones, while their mother, Lorelei, a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence, is absorbed in her work. Yet each family member harbors a secret that implicates them in the accident. During a weeklong recuperation on the Chesapeake Bay, the family confronts the excruciating moral dilemmas triggered by the crash.

Cautionary Tale
Revisado: 07-27-25
Excellent premise and the book was interesting, overall. There were things about the book that I found irksome (i.e., it was overwrought at times, particularly when describing the perfect spoiled son's difficulties). The family was rich, the children were spoiled brats, and in the end, there was little accountability for the characters' misdeeds. Maybe I'm too judgy but having the mad genius Lorelei write a book to warn others about AI seems hypocritical and not really a fitting atonement. Despite my criticism of the lack of justice and the overly-emotional prose, the book showcased the different set of rules for the well off, ticking me off. Any book the creates feelings is a success. To sum this up: it's not my favorite book of the year but I found it credit worthy and it kept me engaged until the end (I kept hoping one of them would end up in the clink!).

Underwhelming
Revisado: 07-26-25
This is a well-written book from a talented writer. The premise is good but the book had an overwhelming tone of malaise, ennui, and inertia that made it an exercise in endurance. Perhaps this is the point of the book? Rich people who lack for nothing but gumption and self-awareness. The male child, no matter how loathsome, can do no wrong (rich territory for interesting storylines left unplowed!). It felt as if these characters drifted through rather uninteresting lives. Additionally, the protagonist's self-destructiveness wasn't very interesting (dumps a good husband). I didn't care for most of the characters in this book, not because they were awful people, but because they were boring.

Historia
Millions of fans of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls - the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true story of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder's biography.

A Wilder Wilder
Revisado: 07-23-25
It's easy to see why this book won the Pulitzer. I read this after devouring "Murderland," and it did not disappoint. The writing is superb and the book moves along at a good pace. Gritty in details of the many hardships that the Ingalls and the Wilders endured, it's the story of a family and a history of America.

Historia
Caroline Fraser grew up in the shadow of Ted Bundy, the most notorious serial murderer of women in American history, surrounded by his hunting grounds and mountain body dumps, in the brooding landscape of the Pacific Northwest. But in the 1970s and ’80s, Bundy was just one perpetrator amid an uncanny explosion of serial rape and murder across the region. Why so many? Why so weirdly and nightmarishly gruesome? Why the senseless rise and then sudden fall of an epidemic of serial killing?

Thought Provoking and Important
Revisado: 07-15-25
Well written and thoroughly researched, the author makes logical conclusions and connections based on statistics and facts, no conspiracy theories. This is a cautionary tale about the impact of rampant greed on humanity and the earth. With lobbyists pushing for deregulation and the thoughtless cuts to the EPA, history is fated to repeat itself.
After finishing this one, I promptly downloaded Ms. Fraser's first book.
For those who want a detailed account of the serial murder cases, this book is not for you.

Selling your Soul for Stupid Stuff
Revisado: 07-09-25
I really enjoyed this book, it epitomizes the worst of modern society. Greed, materialism, sexual objectification, fantasists, and shallowness juxtaposed with humans' primal instincts. The characters were interesting, as was the storyline. The writing and pacing were good, as well. In addition, the narration was perfect.

Who is Francis Fox? A charming English teacher new to the idyllic Langhorne Academy, Fox beguiles many of his students, their parents, and his colleagues at the elite boarding school, while leaving others wondering where he came from and why his biography is so enigmatic. When two brothers discover Fox’s car half-submerged in a pond in a local nature preserve and parts of an unidentified body strewn about the nearby woods, the entire community, including Detective Horace Zwender and his deputy, begins to ask disturbing questions about Francis Fox and who he might really be.

Raw
Revisado: 07-04-25
Classic Joyce Carol Oates. Well-written, this is the story of a pedophile who leaves wreckage in his wake. Additionally, it's a story about privilege. The writing is raw and graphic, taking you inside the predator's world. As with all of Ms. Oates' books, the characters are well developed and the story gripping.

Historia
When Mrs. Blossom finds a winning ticket in a parking lot, everything changes...including Mrs. Blossom. She is determined to see the world that sometimes feels as if it’s passing her by. But when Mrs. Blossom booked her cruise through France on the MS Solitaire, she did not expect to meet Allan on her transatlantic flight. He is the first man who’s sparked something inside her since her beloved husband passed. She also didn’t expect Allan to be found, dead, twenty-four hours later in Paris, a city he wasn’t supposed to be in.

Revisado: 06-30-25
I've read all of Ms. Lippman's books and she is one of my favorite authors. This one disappoints, sadly. It's not a bad book but it was too cutesy for me. Mrs. Blossom was too much of a stereotype. Maybe it gets better but I couldn't stay with it. I prefer books like Prom Mom, Lady in the Lake, After I'm Gone, etc.

Harvard, 1996. Anna is about to graduate when she falls hard for Christoph, a visiting German student. Captivated by his beauty and intelligence, she follows him to Germany, where charming squares and grand facades belie the nation’s recent history and the war’s destruction. Christoph condemns his country’s actions but remains cryptic about the part his own grandfather played. Anna, meanwhile, cannot forget the photos taken by her American GI grandfather at the end of the war, preserved in a scrapbook only she has seen.

What Remains
Revisado: 06-30-25
My dad was a WW2 vet so I'm always looking for good stories that have ties to that era. Inspired by her grandfather's scrapbook, the author wove dual stories -- decades apart -- about the impact of WW2 on different generations. Well written, the book was nicely paced and held my interest. Some won't like the ending but I thought it was perfect.

Historia
When Jackie is twenty-one, she meets the charismatic congressman Jack Kennedy at a dinner party in Georgetown. She is dreaming of France, of a life of freedom and adventure. She has won an internship at Vogue, and she thinks Kennedy is not her kind of adventure: “Too American. Too good-looking. Too boy.” And yet there is his intelligence, his humor and drive, and the chemistry between them. He pursues her, then disappears, then pursues her again in a pattern of intimacy and distance.

Maureen Dowd's Fault
Revisado: 06-30-25
Perhaps my expectations were unfairly high, but I thought this was going to be a good book since Maureen Dowd discussed the novel with the author at a local book store. It's not a bad book, by any means, but it fell short of what I had anticipated. I got about halfway through and then bailed. Maybe if I didn't have better books in my queue, I would have stuck with it.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 06-30-25
I enjoyed this book, for the most part, and finished it. Was it a realistic premise? No, but since it's fiction, that's all right. The writing was solid, not literature, but the author did a good job. The pacing was fine, as well.
