Historia
A member of the landed gentry, with a seemingly guaranteed income from his estate in the country, Oblomov lives in Petersburg, uninterested in the business that provides his living and barely aware that the revenue is diminishing. Not that he leads a dissolute life of extravagance, balls and entertainment. Instead he is a dreamer, a sybarite, content above all to spend most of the day supine, in bed. The novel opens with Oblomov thus ensconced, attended only by his dirty, grumbling, indolent servant Zahar, who has looked after him since childhood, catering to his every need.

Complex characters
Revisado: 09-09-24
Excellent book takes us back to pre revolutionary Russia. Serfs were not much better than slaves. Wealthy landowners could live off their rental income without ever working. Oblomov takes this to an extreme. He is still an endearing character. His love making with the attractive Olga is very moving.

Historia
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Not a book for older men
Revisado: 07-29-24
I share an account with my wife and this. Book popped up as a recommendation. I read it as it had good NYT reviews. Bottom line this is a syrupy story aimed essentially at female audience. Full of cliched types. Amazingly handsome men. Beautiful women who have no self confidence etc.
the only thing that surprised me was that the hero was not stinkingly rich.
Well written but not really for an old man like me.

Attractive characters.
Revisado: 05-06-24
Rather dramatic but an excellent window into the customs and manners of late Victorian society. Good nautical background. The main subject is the rigid societal structure with regard to unattached young women. Still has validity today.

Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Historia
Rory Stewart was an unlikely politician. He was best known for his two-year walk across Asia—in which he crossed Afghanistan, essentially solo, in the months after 9/11—and for his service, as a diplomat in Iraq, and Afghanistan. But in 2009, he abandoned his chair at Harvard University to stand for a seat in Parliament, representing the communities and farms of the Lake District and the Scottish border—one of the most isolated and beautiful districts in England.

Excellent book on English politics.
Revisado: 10-25-23
Wry good book surprisingly well narrated by the author. Gives the reader a vivid view of some of the forces driving the contemporary English political system.
My only negative observation is that with his background and experience Rory must have expected some “challenges” when he went for a swim in the political cesspool. Rory is a little too coy when presenting himself as a rather naïf apprentice politician. Still the British Parliament has lost an excellent MP and is much smaller without Rory….

Here is the story of how the English acquired their vast domain; how they ruled, maintained, and exploited it; and how, within decades, they presided over its dissolution. Here are Britain's triumphs and also her stinging defeats, her heroes and her scoundrels. It is a full and fascinating chronicle of the growth of the British Empire and its people and of the impact that empire had on the rest of the world.

Excellent book
Revisado: 04-23-21
Very pleasant narrative. Brings us back to the early 19th century countryside in England. Great insight into the social structure and preoccupations of the people at that time. It is amusing to see that the heroine was motivated only by love and the highest moral principles. Very little frivolity and zero hormonal distractions kept her perfectly pure. Unfortunately I believe real life is pretty far removed from the authors skillfully crafted construction.

Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Very sad story
Revisado: 03-20-20
It is really tough to get through this book as the story is so sad. Proud independent tribes of Indians betrayed and destroyed by the white mans greed. I was very impressed how thoughtful and intelligent the native tribes were. Their lives were simple. In harmony with nature but incompatible with the white mans colonization of their land. Death and destruction was universally applied.
