As others have mentioned, there is a glitch somewhere. Same intro over and over.
Audible made a mistake??

Great listen by Carl. This one had a main character you routed for with some familiar friends happy to see again. As well, a subplot-bad-guy who could develop into an awkward hero in a future novel if he survives the swamp.

The book is completely spot on for 2020-21 and even now, while we are under new management, remains relevant.

I am a fan of Gladwell. Less so after listening to this book. The themes were disjointed and only superficially tied together. I guess a number of his books are this way, but this particular effort was poor. I took away from this book that even great writers either:
A) pander to the PC (that theme song that pervades,...really, I mean come on...)
B) phone it in every once in a while.

My chief complaint is that he discusses myopic experiences and doesn't realize that he is engaging in that exact practice by giving sufficient details and then selecting only the convenient (popular) conclusions (drunk boys are bad, judges are inaccurate, mentally ill adults should be forgiven their transgressions at all costs). The fact that he obviates the need for ALL parties to assume responsibility in their misfortune or horrific experience paints a lazy and ill-informed picture.

I guess there is a third option from above:

C) Pander AND phone it in.

The author addresses a topic that is never easy to discuss but nevertheless necessary for us to evolve. The story is a narrative centered on the confrontation with the man who abused her and with the conflict she experiences within herself as she reconciles her past and her present.

The book will likely trigger anyone with similar trauma in their past. For those without comparable events, you get a first hand account of her path from processing the assault, to processing her life relative to the assault and finally the resolution (if it could be called that).

There is a genuinely complex individual cover to cover.

My only criticisms are that the narration, at times, sounds like a millennial art history major rather than an accomplished university faculty member.
Also the caustic nature of the character Sara(h) took away from the credibility of the author. Sara so clearly has an axe to grind and she gets in the authors head to make her question some of her conclusions.

This was an amazing book. The details of the story, the fact that it was true, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up and it makes your heart ache. The narration was simply amazing. I am no expert on accents, but the pronunciation and the different voices that came out of that one person just floored me. My next trip to Europe includes a trip to the memorial at Ravensbrück.

I tend to do this when reviews are mixed on content suitability. This book is written to the YA population and it isn’t terribly graphic. It was predictable in that the story moved in a linear fashion. There were no “whoa I didn’t see that coming “ moments.
I agree with some reviews that it was hard to follow the social media references. I disagree with reviews that complained about the homophobia aspects. It wasn’t overly drawn out or included to appeal to a wider liberal audience. It was germane to the story. It was a fine read with only implied sexual situations. The violence was restrained given the target audience. To be fair this is a YA title so the saccharine nature of the dialogue is what you’d expect.

For me I enjoyed the accent I enjoyed the sarcasm and enjoyed the story overall. You can’t help but look up clips on YouTube and really get drawn into the different stories he tells. Then when you Google his wife Lana, you realize just how far above his pay grade he married, and there’s hope for the rest of us. It came across as a very genuine story someone you can’t help but like.

There seems to be a trend in self-help books using bad language in the title. Message among each of them resonates with those of us who are pros at staying stuck in our own heads.
The message here, as it is elsewhere, is that it isn’t easy but it is possible.

One of the strengths of this book for me are the quotes of ancient Greek philosophers. That should not put people off from this book as it sounds awfully scholarly, that isn’t the intention. The one-liners from the Greeks are but we have heard throughout her life times but coming across a blue-collar Scottish accent they make you smile and perhaps, just a little, take root.

I had never listen to anything like this. Like most, my understanding of the war and the man was largely made up of what they told me in fourth grade. This gave dimensions to Jefferson prompting a 4 hour road trip to his home in VA. My only wish was that they talked more about Sally Hemmings. She was apparently a very important part of his life and in the book she comes across as an afterthought

An excellent story and excellent cliffhanger. So great to listen to the Michael Talbot story as it evolves. The only exception is that the author will have to write an errata note given the outcome of the 2016 World Series.
