thrilling!
Revisado: 10-13-22
This podcast brings a resource for the depth, information and continued excitement I seek after watching each episode. I enjoy the interviews and extra bits and bites that Naomi brings together to add to the back story of the characters and the writing that went into creating the show.

In these poems, the joys and struggles of the everyday are played against the grinding politics of being human. Beginning in a hotel room in the dark of a distant city, we travel through history and follow the memory of the Trail of Tears from the bend in the Tallapoosa River to a place near the Arkansas River. Stomp dance songs, blues, and jazz ballads echo throughout. Lost ancestors are recalled. Resilient songs are born, even as they grieve the loss of their country. Joy Harjo is at the top of her form in Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings.

my spirit flies high on her words

Joy's voice... for me it's a southing, calm journey through spirit skies and even modern references to sparkling pop develop some level of connection and awareness of disconnection.
I always prefer to hear poetry in the voice of it's author, the only other way is to hear it in your own head as you read it with your own eyes.
I definitely recommend listening.

Drawing together many histories - of anatomical evolution and city design, of treadmills and labyrinths, of walking clubs and sexual mores - Rebecca Solnit creates a fascinating portrait of the range of possibilities presented by walking. Arguing that the history of walking includes walking for pleasure as well as for political, aesthetic, and social meaning, Solnit focuses on the walkers whose everyday and extreme acts have shaped our culture, from philosophers to poets to mountaineers.

This book is packed with historical facts. I happened to listen to it while taking my morning walks and I feel that greatly impacted the way I received the information. I recommend this book to anyone especially those looking for a listen while they walk, especially if you enjoy walking outdoors.

Historia
First published in 1979, The White Album records indelibly the upheavals and aftermaths of the 1960s. Examining key events, figures, and trends of the era - including Charles Manson, the Black Panthers, and the shopping mall - through the lens of her own spiritual confusion, Joan Didion helped to define mass culture as we now understand it. Written with a commanding sureness of tone and linguistic precision, The White Album is a central example of American reportage and a classic of American autobiography.

I was born in '76. many of these essays were written before my birth and several are as relevant today about California as they were then.
Her writing voice is calm, thorough and exploratory. These essays talk about bits of life and they allow you to absorb the information contained in them as though through a relaxing conversation.
I highly recommend listening.

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Caitlin is an amazing human on a mission! This book was one of the best reads of my life; eye opening to cultural histories and modern culture and lack of ritual for our dead. Narrated by Caitlin, which was part of the reason I bought it. I find her voice rich and beautiful and easy to listen to. Get a glimpse inside North America's funerary system and enjoy being educated and guided by Caitlin!

In a new and major novel, the creator of fantastic universes of vampires and witches takes us now into the world of Isaiah and Jeremiah and the destruction of Solomon's Temple, to tell the story of Azriel, Servant of the Bones. He is ghost, genii, demon, angel - pure spirit made visible. He pours his heart out to us as he journeys from an ancient Babylon of royal plottings and religious upheavals to Europe of the Black Death and on to the modern world. There he finds himself, amidst the towers of Manhattan, in confrontation with his own human origins.

This book is my husband's favorite tale by our beloved Anne.
It is filled with beautiful descriptions of velvet and gold, aching souls and possible redemption.
It's definitely worth listening to.

Historia
Two million years ago, Africa: A skinny, long-limbed creature who walks on two legs, can’t sprint, and has no weapons turns away from his under-nourished friends, and runs down a much stronger antelope. Dinner. Over succeeding generations, this creature evolves into one of the best distance runners on the planet: the human being. Yet in the age of modernity, we find ourselves unable to run without more than half of us suffering injury. This book looks at the injury epidemic in running and what the barefoot running movement believes are the causes of injury.

riding on the coat tails of a master story teller
Revisado: 03-29-22
Unfortunately I was not impressed with this "book," which the author did refer to as an essay. The author essentially tried to find loopholes and errors in McDougall's writing of Born To Run. A few things the author mentioned seemed more like common sense and due process for any person investigating attempting a new sport. I feel this person was trying to nit pick certain aspects of Born To Run just to make an opposing argument and then state obvious things like one should read more than one source before embarking on a new path.
Not worth the time.

I enjoy a good vampire story, and this was definitely a good one.
I've never listened to a book with music in it, which I enjoyed very much, along with the sound effects. I found it to be more like listening to theater on the radio.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

unexpected inspirational history lesson
Revisado: 03-18-22
Initially I started this book with the hope of finding health information, I found inspiration instead!
The deeds accomplished in this story kept me inspired to continue my morning walks as I had just started exercising again. There's so much information among wonderful story telling, I never wanted to stop listening even after my walk!
I had read another book by Christopher McDougall about endurance running, in the past, and knew, based on that one, that this would be a good tale no matter what it involved!
The narration was also stunning and engaging! Nicholas has a great voice!
