Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Important and captivating
Revisado: 04-05-24
A wonderfully crafted account of the experiences of women who served in Vietnam. Important for rectifying the lack of recognition for their service and the lives they saved; important for understanding what this service to our country cost them. This story moved me to tears several times. If any of these unsung heroes are reading these reviews, I thank you for your service.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A story of lost and found love
Revisado: 12-10-23
What a unique and wonderful book. At first I was not clear how all the storylines would fit together, but they do. The star of the show, of course, is Marcellus. If you were listening to the audiobook, the narrator who provides the voice of Marcellus does a fantastic job of embodying his true personality. Marcellus pulls, the characters together, literally and figuratively, proving of course, that he is more intelligent than any of the humans.

A slow start but big finish
Revisado: 10-06-23
I had a bit of a hard time getting into this book and thought it started out slowly. But since this was for my book club, I persevered and turned to be a heartwarming story with a many themes relevant to today’s social struggles. It is part love story, part children’s lit with a bit of fantasy thrown in. Readers who hand in there will get a lovely reward.

Another great Rosalind Thorne mystery, despite poor narration
Revisado: 07-14-23
Another great story by Darcie Wilde. Rosalind Thorne has her usual challenges in solving multiple mysteries and this latest case proves entertaining and engaging. However, why or why did Audible change narrators??? Ms Kelly is not a great narrator and has a limited range, she seemed to only be able to do 3 voices, and so several characters sounded the same. In addition, she gave the young women low husky voices, making them sound like chain smokers. An old main sounded like a squeaky oil can. Not pleasant or believable. But if you can get past the narration, the story is a good one.

Ridiculous and slow moving
Revisado: 05-28-23
The initial premise of the story is almost impossible to believe - that a successful business man, with an attorney on staff, would forget to update his will, his prenup and any life insurance. And the new wife would not wonder why the Will wasn’t updated??? I get it’s a romance and so most of the story is a fantasy, but really, this premise is more preposterous than most science fiction.
I also found parts of the story to really drag on. The crux of the story was over by about chapter 19, but several chapters later it was still dragging on. A few chapter were devoted to the couple meeting up and having dinner. There’s a way to set the scene without providing a second by second description of what happened. Very odd that an entire dinner scene takes a chapter but an entire court case gets a few paragraphs.

Not as good as prior installments
Revisado: 01-21-23
Disappointed in the story line and in the Audible version. there were so many different characters, it was hard to keep track of them all. And, listening to the Audible book, I was disappointed that the narrator changed once again. This narrator was not as good as the prior two women.

Historia
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Historia
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

A bit disappointing
Revisado: 11-28-22
I bought this book because I really enjoyed the first one in this series. Unfortunately the writing was not as punchy and witty as the first. I suppose the tension between the narrator and Hawthorn relies on the element of surprise, wondering what Hawthorn will do next. And that aspect seems to be frequently missing in the second book. Overall, a fairly good mystery but falling short in comparison to the first book.

Keeps you on the edge of your seat
Revisado: 10-07-22
Superbly written, this is a thrilling page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The women in the story have backgrounds that although common, are rarely written about. This element adds another dimension to this story which makes it even more engaging. This would make an excellent movie!

This is the third book in the series and is just as engaging as the first two. With well drawn characters and an intriguing mystery, this book will keep you hooked to the very last page. Kudos also to the narrator for the Audible version. I’m hoping the series continues.
